The wacky moves of Alaska

While the heated semifinals battle in the PBA Philippine Cup rages on, Alaska quietly made a move to bolster its frontline by plucking little-used Samigue Eman from San Miguel’s reserve list. While the center wouldn’t be able to suit up for the Aces until the next conference, the foxiness of the move wasn’t lost on basketball fans that saw the center play in the PBL, before he got injured prior to joining the PBA draft.

In Eman, Alaska gets a young center who boasts not just untapped potential, but who showed surprising athleticism and a nasty edge during his PBL days with Welcoat/Rain or Shine. Alaska team manager Joaqui Trillo compares Eman favorably with Alaska’s all-star center Sonny Thoss.

The transaction is just another in a long line of savvy moves for the Aces. While the team’s record isn’t perfect when it comes to developing players, the team’s brain trust led by Trillo and coach Tim Cone make it a point to try to find players who will fit into the team’s system. Sometimes, it doesn’t pan out – I always wondered why guys like Brixter Encarnacion, Don Camaso, and Aaron Aban didn’t mesh with the system – but more often than not, it works. It’s no coincidence that the franchise has made it to the semifinals of the all-Filipino conference 4 times in the last 5 years.

So despite not having the resources of the richer SMC teams or Talk N Text, the Aces have managed to be consistently successful. How do they do it? With trades like these:

YearTradeNotes
1991Elmer Cabahug to Purefoods for Jojo LastimosaCabahug had three great seasons with Purefoods that included two All-Filipino crowns, but these were marred by salary issues. Lastimosa was the leader of the Alaska franchise for the next decade, and ended the ‘90s with 10 championships (9 with Alaska).
1994Bong Alvarez to Sta. Lucia for Bong HawkinsAlaska traded away troubled superstar Alvarez for Hawkins, the third member of its vaunted triangle along with Lastimosa and Johnny Abarrientos. Alvarez got into more trouble in his stint with Sta. Lucia, when he hooked up with Vivian Velez, got injured, hung out with Benjie Paras in the US, and asked for a trade to Shell to hang out with his buddy. That didn’t work out either.
1995Bong Solomon to Ginebra for the draft pick that turned out to be Jeffrey CariasoAfter getting traded to Ginebra, the team discovered that Solomon was legally blind. He might have still been a better player than Dudut Jaworski though.
1997Cris Bolado to Purefoods for Rodney Santos and Bryant PunzalanWhile Cris Bolado won a championship for Purefoods as a lucky charm backup to Jerry Codinera, Santos (whose awful nickname ‘The Slasher’ was coined by our favorite Quinito Henson) was an integral part of Alaska’s late ‘90s championship run, usually playing point guard in Tim Cone’s big backcourt set.
1997Dwight Lago and Boyet Fernandez to Pop Cola for Kenneth DuremdesAlaska lost Cariaso left for Mobiline that season for a more lucrative offer, but the Milkmen stole Duremdes, then a backup to Vergel Meneses at Pop, in a late season trade. Alaska subsequently won the next three conference championships with Duremdes in its lineup.
2003Kenneth Duremdes to Sta. Lucia for Brandon CablayThe shocker of the 2003 draft saw Alaska trading its top gun in exchange for a draft pick. But the move gave the Aces financial flexibility to stock up on talent, while Duremdes’ massive contract became an albatross for Sta. Lucia, who didn’t win a championship until after they traded Duremdes to Coke four years later.
2005John Arigo and Ali Peek to Coca-Cola for Jeffrey Cariaso and Reynel HugnatanAlaska looked like they got the short end of the stick, talent-wise, in this trade. But Cariaso’s leadership was a boon for the team’s chemistry, and Hugnatan has transformed into one of Alaska’s most important players as a frontcourt Swiss army knife for Tim Cone off the bench.
2006Don Allado to Talk N Text for Willie Miller and John FerriolsAt the time, Talk N Text coach Derrick Pumaren justified this trade because it allowed his team to acquire Renren Ritualo. Okaay. Since the trade, Miller has been the Aces’ franchise player.
2008Mike Cortez and Ken Bono to San Miguel for LA Tenorio and Larry FonacierWhile Mike Cortez has been a solid backup point guard for the Beermen, no one’s comparing him to Johnny Abarrientos. Meanwhile, Tenorio’s steady improvement has people gushing about him as potentially the best point guard in the league since the Flying A.

Of course, not all trades are lopsided: Johnny Abarrientos and Poch Juinio to Coca-Cola for Ali Peek and Jon Ordonio was alright for Alaska, but keyed the 2003 All-Filipino title for Coke. Its 2006 swap with San Miguel involving Brandon Cablay and Nic Belasco was a push, as neither player stayed long for either team. The 2008 trade for Mark Borboran in exchange for JR Quinahan looks pretty even, with each player contributing for his new team, as is the trade with Rain or Shine that featured Joe Devance for Sol Mercado and Eddie Laure. Still, you can’t say that Alaska got fleeced in any of these trades.

Ten years from now, when I become a billionaire and buy my own PBA team, the first rule for my team manager would be to never, ever trade with Joaqui Trillo.

Yup. Alaska has been one of the most steadiest teams in terms of value-transactions & draft picks ........

Well except maybe for Migs Noble & Alex Araneta (two-left feet if ever there was one - though he knew & played his role well in Cone's plays).
#1.1 jaemark on 2010-02-16 14:19 (Reply)
their draft history hasn't been as impressive as their transactions, unfortunately
#1.2 kugmong_batchoy on 2010-02-16 15:59 (Reply)
I also notice that their team is the most values oriented.

hahaha... ang BP... hahaha...

does this make joaqui trillo the kevin pritchard of the pba?

haha. and yeah. that bong solomon story never gets old.

i always thought pritchard was overrated. daryl morey pa, hehe.

AGREE AKO JAN. Haha. Pitchard makes a lot of draft day deals because he has cash because of his wealthy owner. The hell my beloved Houston Rockets doesnt even have an all star this year and they're in the hunt for a playoff berth.
#3 benj on 2010-02-16 14:16 (Reply)
Great assessment.

I think it's worth saying as well that Kenneth Duremdes arrived as bonafide star when he went to Alaska (he was the 1998 MVP). Alaska could have gone for another Grandslam if not for the Centennial Team loaned players.

Gutsy non-trade move:

In 1996, Alaska went with a 6-2 import in a conference that allows imports up to 6-8. They had to do this because Derek Hamilton failed a drug test. Sean Chambers led the Milkmen over Shell in 7 games (with Kenny Redfield in tow).
#4 Jowana Bueser on 2010-02-16 14:21 (Reply)
Also worth noting that Bong Hawkins won the Most Improved Player and became one of the contenders for the MVP when he moved to the Aces. Duremedes won the MVP right after he was traded to the Aces.
#5 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-02-16 14:46 (Reply)
hold on. jolas demanded for a trade since he won't grow big behind the huge shadows of alvin patrimonio and jerry codiñera. in simple terms, he forced his way out to be the man.
#5.1 jaemark on 2010-02-16 14:58 (Reply)
i don't think lastimosa's motivations were that simple (or stupid). if all he wanted to be was "the man", why would he go to a team with bong alvarez already in the lineup? money was the issue with jolas... purefoods wasn't willing to give out superstar money after the alvin patrimonio contract saga.

si asaytono yung umalis sa purefoods dahil natatabunan ni patrimonio at codinera.
#5.1.1 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-02-16 15:22 (Reply)
what contract saga? the one in 1988? or that one in june 1991 when pepsi mega offered cap with P25.1M, 5-yr contract when his rookie contract was about to expire?

but why june 1991? the context: rfm swift held patrimonio and initially glenn capacio, by having them signed a MOA (to circumvent the amateur rule) to play for swift until dec. 1988, even if during that time, the two, along with jolas and jerry were initially tagged as part of the bumper crop of super rookies.

as a compromise, patrimonio played out his swift MOA until june 1988. in effect, cap missed one whole conference and that prevented him from contending for the ROY award, which Jolas and Jerry disputed.
#5.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-02-16 15:38 (Reply)
i was referring to the 1991 contract issue. but if you're right (and i think you are) that the pepsi mega offer sheet came after lastimosa left? i stand corrected.

but yeah, i dunno if it was a case of jolas wanting to be "the man". he was already purefoods team captain then (ironically, if he hadn't left, alvin would never have become "the captain").
#5.1.1.1.1 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-02-16 15:49 (Reply)
it depends. because quinito gave him that captain lionheart moniker i think during the 1993 AFC. hehehe
#5.1.1.1.1.1 maeve on 2010-02-16 15:53 (Reply)
who gave the Cap the Lionheart monicker? matanong nga ang mga Solid Alvin.. hehe
#5.1.1.1.1.2 jaemark on 2010-02-16 15:57 (Reply)
he was already "the captain".

quinito ruined the nickname when he added lionheart.

taena, ang ganda-ganda na ng "the captain" eh. simple. plus, it harkens to willis reed and kareem abdul-jabbar.

#6 maeve on 2010-02-16 15:39 (Reply)
as what ive known, it was jolas who demanded the trade. he couldnt accept the fact that he was being overshadowed by Cap and the Defense Minister. pati nga personal na buhay outside the court nadamay jan. while Cap and Jerry are still friends, and even hanging out every once in a while.
#6.1 jaemark on 2010-02-16 15:42 (Reply)
actually, i hear that jolas and alvin are still pretty close, while alvin and jerry may have drifted apart, especially after the mvp controversy between the two of them.
#6.1.1 maeve on 2010-02-16 15:49 (Reply)
that's contrary to what i know. there come to point when jolas avoided Cap, good thing he's civil now. about Cap and Jerry, they are still close friends until now. hanging out every now and then, attending special gathering and such.
#7 Angrypeople on 2010-02-16 15:45 (Reply)
Slightly OT ....... if ever there was one team which was Draft-hungry, it would have to be Purefoods.

I recall draft after draft - Purefoods selecting up to the very last drop of viable picks. Hehe.

Perhaps, the PBA draft busts & sleepers will be discussed on a future thread.

I'm pretty sure EVERYONE here will have something to say on that.
#7.1 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-02-16 15:58 (Reply)
not necessarily true.

check this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_PBA_Draft and all the links for the all draft.

FYI. Purefoods traded its no. 1 pick in the 1991 Draft because Vergel Meneses, the supposed top rookie draft pulled out his application after he was found to have falsified his records (birthyear / school record). He was nearly sued by then Kume Rudy Salud.

PF traded that right to Alaska for Elmer Reyes. Alaska got Alex Araneta, one of the biggest no. 1 busts, possibly next to Apet Jao.
#7.1.1 Angrypeople on 2010-02-16 16:19 (Reply)
What I simply meant was ..... it seemed during the early years, Purefoods was almost always on tops of the actual number of picks made.

As for quality of draft picks for each team ..... it's definitely worth another thread. Hehe.

Definitely, Alex Araneta was the draft bust of all time ..... like I said, the guy had "two-left feet".

Why wacky moves? From the examples that you presented, there is more advantage towards AA.

The thing that you should try to clarify here is why was Eman the one SMB released despite the many salimpusa on their bench? Do they have some inside information about his true physical condition as a result of that injury?

Haka haka mode: AA would get Eman (and not Ginebra) and in return, AA would allow Ginebra to win the next four games of the semis. YAHOOODAAA !!! LOL

Isn't there a better adjective to use instead of "wacky" which obviously refers to Joaquin Trillo's nickname? I think that credit should have been given to him for the team's excellence all thoughout this years despite of being not a fan of theirs.
#10.2 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-17 02:11 (Reply)
"Why wacky moves? From the examples that you presented, there is more advantage towards AA."
- I agree. Why wacky moves? Was that just simply a reference to Joaqui Trillo? I think that is not a good thing considering that there must be some bias towards the Alaska Team manager. Responsible journalism or should I say blogging should not entertain bias considering that you want this to be considered fair and balanced news reporting? Besides, Alaska did well in their team's composition all through out the years.

"The thing that you should try to clarify here is why was Eman the one SMB released despite the many salimpusa on their bench? Do they have some inside information about his true physical condition as a result of that injury? "
- An injury would be a probable cause. Another probable reason is that Danny I has an existing P500,000 a month contrac that is on-going until he turns 40 and Eman's stay affects the team's salary cap. Also, another probable cause is that Eman is the "weakest" among SMB's big men like Danny I, Danny S and Arwind Santos. Finally, it also is a testament to Coach Siot's weak coaching as he has no idea how to develop a player like Eman, who spent most of his time sitting in SMB's bench.

"Haka haka mode: AA would get Eman (and not Ginebra) and in return, AA would allow Ginebra to win the next four games of the semis. YAHOOODAAA !!! LOL"
- Abangan ang susunod na kabanata!!!!LOL

The LA for Cortez swap was a big risk. Cortez was already doing well in Alaska (except for the injuries) and LA was more of up tempo PG and its hard to envision him thriving in Cone's system. If my memory serves me right, SMB dealt LA because they felt Jonas was a better replacement for Olsen Racela. Why Alaska did it? Maybe because of the injuries. Im the biggest LA Tenorio fan but I cant say hes the best PG right now. Maybe top 5. But he's doing pretty well and it seems like he communicates well with Cone. Im still amazed at how well LA fits with Willie considering both are small PGs and both demand the ball to be successful. Maybe Miller wants to rest because he's old already and LA is more like Pau who performs really well behind a top 10 player.

The Devance move was pretty solid as well. Never thought someone like Joe (so much talent but seems to underperform) would fit in Cone's system.

Cone just has the patience and faith that his team will only get better as time goes by. Maybe thats why they played so poorly last conference. They had so much difficulty intergrating Ellis back in the lineup since he was an in-season addition. (Other than being so down from losing to TNT)

Wow.. I was shocked when I heard the Aces got Samigue Eman. I was hoping Smart Gilas might corale him but I'm an Aces supporter so I am pleased with the transaction.

I did not know some of those trades.. thanks for this article. I've only seen two PBA games in person and they were during the 2000 All Filipino quarterfinals at the PhilSports Arena. I began following PBA then.

That was the conference when Tanduay had to forfeit their playoff wins over Purefoods. The Rhum Masters were very good. I became a fan of Jeffrey Cariaso. Erik Menk and Dondon Hontiveros were on that club as well. I was not an Aces fan then but I was very impressed with the play of Kenneth Duremdes in that series.

A few months before I was privileged to see an MBA playoff match in Negros Occidental. I saw John Ferriols and Reynel Hugnatan as Negros Slashers. They defeated Michel Lhuillier's Cebu Gems. jaemark, that was a great league.. fans were so loyal to their provincial teams. Those were great times..

I spent some time in Iloilo in '99, during the second year of the MBA, and even there, the city was abuzz with Negros Slashers fever (not much on the Iloilo Volts, because they sucked).

It's a market the PBA hasn't touched, and could do well to cultivate.
