Rajko Toroman responds to Jamal Sampson

I got a curious email tonight from Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman, containing a long and impassioned message in response to the series of emails from Jamal Sampson that was posted on this blog. Let me just preface, with all due respect to Coach Toroman, that while very inspiring especially for Smart Gilas fans, the message contained little about the meat of Sampson’s allegations against the SBP, his contract situation.

That said, it’s worth a read for every Pinoy basketball fan. What follows is Rajko Toroman’s email, in full:

In the name of truth, [and the interest] of Smart Gilas players, SBP, and basketball fans, I felt obliged to give a comment on Jamal Sampson’s statements and accusations.

In a very short time that he spent with Smart Gilas team, J. Sampson’s become “informed” about everything and anything. The relationship between SBP and PBA, SBP and players, SBP and me, players’ motivations, “fears”… I am impressed.

WHAT IS THE POINT HERE?

Turns out everyone is guilty about something, everyone is immoral, incompetent, unprofessional, except Saint Jamal.

The man is able to make a fight between two eyes in the head. And all this, for his alibi.

I have to admit, he is an expert in changing the essence of the issues.

What is the issue here?

The issue is that J. Sampson refused to help his teammates, to win the tournament in Dubai. He betrayed these good guys (as he says), who left their heart and sweat on the floor of the Dubai arena in order to achieve the best possible result.

THIS IS THE FACT AND THE POINT IN J. SAMPSON’S CASE. EVERYTHING ELSE IS EMPTY TALKING.

THE HISTORY OF THE CASE

After the friendly game we had in Dubai, Sampson said that his knee was injured. The team doctor told me that he examined his knee and that there were no visible signs of injury, no swelling. When we came to Dubai, he was taken for a checkup with orthopedist. The conclusion was the same, no visible signs of injury.

When we came back to Manila, Sampson was sent on MRI check up. Again, this time confirmed with MRI, no restrictions in practicing and playing. Meaning, J. Sampson is not and was not injured. HE DIDN’T WANT TO PLAY.

According to the information that we got in Dubai, this is the scenario that he was repeating with other teams also, e.g. when he was playing at Arabic games for Jordan team Zain, on the first game he INJURED his back. On the whole tournament, played only for a few minutes on some games. As we were told, the same happened in China. It seems that he is very well known as “the one that is always injured”.

With everything that was happening with Sampson, I had every reason to believe in the new information.

Chronologically, things were happening in this order:

  1. When he came to Manila, on the first two weeks, he was very good in practice. I think he had like a hundred dunks (all that while “sleeping on the floor”). While negotiating, he was asked to play one game against PBA team. Refused it twice. Didn’t want to play before the contract was signed.

  2. After the contract was signed, his debut for Smart Gilas was on the third game against Barako Bull. Back injury happened in the 3rd minute of the game. I really was not bothered, not because of his possible injury, it’s part of the job, but with the way he was showing it to everyone in the gym. That made me suspicious. And after this game he left to [go to the] US for Xmas holidays.

  3. When Sampson came back, we arranged a friendly game against San Miguel on January 5th, only because of Jamal (who didn’t practice with the team for 20 days), just to be at least a little bit prepared for the game that we had in the PBA on January 6th, against Purefoods. AND WHAT JAMAL DID? HE DIDN’T SHOW UP! Later he said that he didn’t know about the game, which of course was not the truth. I personally told him that we’d have a game because of him, and also staff member checked on him about 1.5 hours before the game, and he said that he is dressing up for the game.

Next day, came the PBA game against Purefoods. Sampson said that he couldn’t play because of stomach troubles. Again, he was showing everyone he was sick. If it were not sad, it would be ridiculous.

After all this came the Dubai story.

That is Jamal Sampson. The man and the player that cannot take the responsibility. Alibi player who accuses everyone on the way to take the money.

His comment about my assistants is beyond every sense for good taste. For your information, Jamal, the best coach in Europe for the year 2009 is a Serbian coach who never played basketball, but still is making miracles with his team. You don’t have to be tall to be a good coach.

I personally was not criticized much in Jamal’s letter, probably because it would be useless, because I have results behind me, European competitions and Olympic games. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if, after this letter, he has something “nice” to say about me. That would be so Jamal. I have no intention to answer anything else anymore. I have more important things to do, not time for waste.

ABOUT ME TREATING PLAYERS LIKE KIDS

In case Jamal wanted to offend me, I have to disappoint him. THEY ARE MI KIDS! I am their teacher. I can be a father to each and every one of them. My goal is not only to make them good basketball players, but respected people also, not drugged and drunk losers. And yes, it is tough sometimes. And Maybe they are not always happy with me being tough, but at the end of the story, when I see successful people, honest and honorable warriors, my heart is full, and I am sure, theirs too.

AND JAMAL, THEY WERE FAITHING OVER THERE IN DUBAI, LIKE MATURE GROWNUPS! EVERYONE, EXCEPT YOU!

And you, you took a liberty to doubt their motives, to doubt everyone’s motives, in this project.

This expensive project is dedicated to the people of the Philippines. This is for the country, and happiness.

God gave you the body to be a great basketball player. But that is obviously not enough. You don’t like basketball. You don’t know and you’ll never know how it is when you are on the throne. How all the sweat and blood and tears are forgotten when the medal is around your neck, and when you know that this small thing is a big thing to each and every soul in your country.

I know how this feels, Jamal, and I will do everything in my power to give this feeling to my players. I feel sorry for you, because you’ll never know.

And YES, for that [to happen,] it’s gonna be discipline, and we will live like a family, and everyone will be on time (because you have to respect other people) and we will go for meals together, and we will finish them together (it is elementary decency) in good manners and mutual respect. And YES, there will be no place for the ones who are not ready to respect the team spirit. We have a difficult task in front of us, and we can make it only if we are like one breed.

You, Jamal, you didn’t want to share the air with us. In a very short time you made enough troubles that others can’t in 10 years.

Jamal Sampson had his reasons to leave the team and he was not treated correctly because of the coach's crazy and unnecessary rules. If a corporation is not going to uphold the contract and keep all that they promised a Player - the Player has a right to complain and to leave a team!

Jamal's email message is nothing compared to the email message of Coach Rajko. Rajko's details are too much to believe Jamal's generalizations.
So now we know.

while i appreciate the email from coach rajko, and it gives us a better perspective about the man, make no mistake about it: the issues brought up by sampson's email haven't been resolved. we still don't know if the SBP acted in bad faith during contract negotiations, and we still don't know why backed by a rich corporate sponsor experienced delays in salary.

it's frustrating that the SBP personnel involved with those matters haven't come forward with a statement on this.

Jae, if the issue is the non or late payments or fulfilling the contract to the point, Jamal did not fulfill the contract first - that is to PLAY.
On his release from Gilas, I do not think any concern Gilas might have why they are keeping Jamal on the ropes. Isn't that interesting? Why keep a player who does not want to PLAY?
#5.1.2.1 jaemark on 2010-02-12 01:55 (Reply)
oh, except that sampson has been asking for his release, and it hasn't been granted to him. he has been asking for it since before the dubai trip.

of course, i'm going by what sampson says, and it's an issue that could be cleared up if someone from the SBP spoke up. like i said, it's awesome that coach rajko chose to release a statement, but how about the ones actually in charge of negotiating a contract?
#5.1.2.1.1 Gilasinsider on 2010-02-12 02:03 (Reply)
it 's easier said then done about the money issues. Smart is a very very big corporation and it is not that simple to make the money go around to reach its destination. The money may not come on time always but it does come.

As to why Gilas is holding on to Sampson as he claims it is, i'm not too sure, i wonder if it might be cause if they just dropped him or terminated his contract then they'd have to pay a certain termination fee or something like that. BUt believe me, their search for a next import has already started so everything with Jamal is done. Jamal Watkins though, is slated to arrive and workout soon.
#5.1.2.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-02-12 02:06 (Reply)
here's the rub: under Fiba rules, a player can't transfer to a country if his old team in another country doesn't give his agent a letter of clearance.

i appreciate you trying to explain the issue, but it would still be better if there were a statement from someone in an official capacity.
#5.1.2.1.1.1.1 PINOYkaNO on 2010-02-12 02:13 (Reply)
just a thought....baka naman yung ibang international teams yung ayaw ipa-release sa Gilas si Jamal....LOL
#5.1.2.1.1.2 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-12 03:23 (Reply)
Doesn't Jamal Sampson have an agent? If he was responsible enough, he would have at least somebody to represent him and explain him details whenever he goes into player transactions especially when playing in other countries. Things would have been faster if he really knew was he was going into as a player.

At least CJ Giles probably had one so he was able to play in Lebanon right now.
#5.1.2.2 kugmong_batchoy on 2010-02-15 10:44 (Reply)
I will not agree with that bossing. The statement of Jamal about NO PAY, NO PLAY is true.

Actually, it is very easy to clarify all of this. First, when was the contract signed? Next, let them SBP show the receipt of the payments made to Jamal every month for his services. These two documents is enough to demolish Jamal's claims. Let us not go to the issue of who was lazy or who got the most excuses. We would only go on circles.

If SBP can show when the contract was signed and that they have paid Jamal in full and on time as per contract, then all of Toroman's statement above is all rightful and true.

On the other hand, if SBP cannot show us these documents, then Jamal's claim is substantiated.

Finally, don't try to fool me that both of them are bounded by the confidentiality and non-disclosure clause of the contract, thereby constraining them to release such documentation, because i'm pretty sure that particular clause of the contract is one sided and only applies to the player.

hahaha... ang BP... hahaha...

Quinito is a PBA publicist. He is more interested in writing about the PBA and defending them of controversies and their failures rather than writing something of national interest like the Smart Gilas Team.

Besides, didn't he already feature both CJ Giles and Jamal Sampson in his columns?
#8 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-12 03:00 (Reply)
It is definitely a learning experience for Gilas. We always ask, why hasn't the Gilas hired an import yet? Sometimes there is a season of delay.

Definitely, not all imports are going to play for Gilas. Aside from that, they have to expect that imports with credentials like being a Division I player and an NBA journeyman which includes being the former teammate of Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant, they expect to be treated differently. LOL
#8.1 PINOYkaNO on 2010-02-12 03:25 (Reply)
I think non-issue kung sino man ang nakasams mong players or teams in the past. False pride ata yun. Habol lang naman ng Gilas siguro honor and integrity in an import. Yung walang self diagnosed false injuries.
#8.1.1 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-12 03:30 (Reply)
Tama ka. Expect false pride from them especially when they are asked to play for our country. Sad but true.

With regards to Gilas, I think they are more interested in somebody who can help the team instead of his credentials.

The team needs an import that consists of both immense talent and great attitude in the court.

By asking Jamal Sampson to play even before finalizing his a contract, one could certainly detect some flaws and unprofessionalism within the SBP/Smart Gilas organization. We simply cannot paint Jamal as a greedy mercenary for wanting to uphold his rights. As he indirectly stated, he was refusing to play because he felt that management was failing to make good on its commitments. Any employee for that matter would be demoralized if he is not getting what is due him. Jamal's claims regarding the complaints of other players has a lot of substance and it is very interesting how "Saint Noli" and the entire SBP leadership will have to say about this. It is common knowledge that Noli has an axe to grind against the PBA since his ungraceful exit for which he only has himself to blame. I particularly don't appreciate how he tried to sow intrigue between the PBA and the Smart Gilas program, frequently trying to insult the former instead of treating it as a big brother that is there lending support to the latter. We thank Jamal for shedding light on the matter and if he were a mercenary who only cared about money, I believe he wouldn't have bothered explaining his side. The million dollar question is, does the recent reshuffling of SBP/Talk and Text basketball officials mean that "Saint Noli" has finally fallen from MVP's grace? We will all stay tuned.
#9.1 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-12 07:22 (Reply)
Jamal Sampson should have had an agent before he undergoes any contract negotiations with the SBP or any country for that matter. The agent definitely should have explained everything to him. Aside from that, the agent will always there to represent him in terms of contract and other conditions needed for him to become an RP Smart Gilas player. Why does not he have one? That is the million dollar question!
#9.2 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-12 07:52 (Reply)
As for the SBP, this should be a learning experience on their part that next time they plan to recruit imports, it must make sure that these players are fully represented by agents who must make sure that the terms and conditions of their contracts are fully explained so that controversies like this would be avoided in the future.

"with all due respect to Coach Toroman, that while very inspiring especially for Smart Gilas fans, the message contained little about the meat of Sampson’s allegations against the SBP, his contract situation."

-well, he may not have directly dwelt on the contract negotiations, but at least he had put some light on the issue from a coach's perspective. the guy really showed little dedication early on.

the management may have its shortcomings, but come on, mvp's pocket is not endless.

the smart gilas program is an ambitious one. and yes, mvp (and smart in general) has huge benefits for sponsoring it in terms of the company's goal to establish a name and image by supporting this popular sport.
that is, they're not, in the strictest sense, really being philanthropic.

but come on, give them a break. if you really genuinely love the sport, you'd love to see ANY team of ours - may it be pros from the pba or the amateurs - excel in the international arena, regardless of who's backing them up.

i've been quite a follower of this blog, and i can't help but notice that in every opportunity, you take a swipe at the smart gilas team and the program in general, yet willing kisses powerade's and guiao's ass. this one (http://firequinito.com/archives/129-Jones-Cup-day-6-Korean-shooters-make-it-rain-in-the-clutch,-down-Powerade-Team-Pilipinas.html), for instance.

yes they weren't able to prepare well for the tianjin tournament, hence the failure. but is preparation supposedly not an internal part of the powerade program? isn't that the team management's responsibility? well, did this blog of yours bring that up? no, not in even just a few lines.

this blog is becoming too pretentious, and biased at that.

isn't it curious that Gilas coach Rajko Toroman felt the need to address the issue, while the SBP hasn't made any statement?

DAMN! I JUST COULDN'T STOP LAUGHING - FAN BOY HILARIOUS!!! SOUNDS LIKE A BOY BAND.

Thanks for airing your side Coach T. - Honestly speaking WE trust you more than the SBP. Com'on guys lets admit it POLITICS is really present not only in Smart Gilas but in such PRO Leagues (SAD to say it's very obvious in the Philippines.

What about the Noli issue - sounds crazy if it's true - YOU DON'T HAVE TO MOTIVATE PLAYERS BY MEANS OF REVENGE. Please check on the meaning of the word RETREAT. Or I might as well say learn about the true meaning of a retreat. Is this all about the so called scandal that you had been through that resulted in you being kicked out of the PBA. I used to believe in you but after that... I could say its such a Carabao S.

@ JAMAL - yeah good to know you follow your instincts. IF IT HAPPENED TO ME I WOULD ALSO DO THE SAME. - why would I play with all my heart if there you can sense that there is a breach of contract. CAN'T ANYONE SEE THIS - HE CAME BACK AFTER THE HOLIDAY VACATION - In the first place he is back in the US why does he have to travel back in RP if he isn't satisfied and willing to sacrifice. HE CAN ALWAYS MAKE A LAME EXCUSE FROM THERE.

Coach Toroman is not the problem.
Jamal Sampson is not the problem.

The person in charge of Smart Gilas or SBP is to blame.

"Revenge is just a boomerang".

"You can't cover S**T with S**T lalabas at lalabas din ang amoy".

Jamal, learn the value of HARD WORK. There is no such thing as easy money. You want your money? WORK FOR IT. Prove that you DESERVE every single penny.

Then again, YOU DON'T.

So don't be surprised if people are not exactly on your side. Don't play the pity card. You're NOT a victim.

PS: Eh bakit yung kay CJ Giles, magulo man, wala namang ganitong issue na lumabas? Nag-dadahilan lang talaga tong si Sampson.

Mr. Toroman, you can preach all you want about how a player should conduct himself, but the fact of the matter is, Jamal Sampson is not getting paid of his salary. Now let just say you where in his shoes , you've been practicing the team and coaching/training them and you're not getting paid for it , how do you think you'll feel. Betrayed? I'm sure you wouldn't waste your time here, and probably wanting to get the first plane out. You must also remember that Jamal didn't come here just because he felt like playing for the Philippines, they asked him to play for Smart Gilas, with the promise that he is going to be paid. Lastly , you talked about treating everybody like family, and being the head of the family , you must always make sure that every member of your family is getting what they're supposed to get and not only thinking about whether you're getting paid on time or not.
#13.1 jaemark on 2010-02-12 14:03 (Reply)
all valid points. but to be fair to Coach Toroman, he is addressing Sampson's comments about the program from his point of view, which is the coach's. and his letter gives us great perspective on where he's coming from as a coach.

i'm not sure Toroman knows exactly what's going on with Sampson's contract situation.

at that time, including coach Toroman, because of some tehnical difficulties. But everyone was working, except Jamal. He started to fake his injury long before it was time to get the salary.

Are you from Smart Gilas? You seem to know a lot. Why don't you guys come out in the open and try to air your side?
#13.2.1.1 george on 2010-02-13 12:04 (Reply)
I'm close to someone from Smartgilas. If you read the letter from the coach more carefuly, you would notice that Jamal;s so called injuries started on the next day after signing the contract. From that time he had only two practices.
#13.2.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-02-13 12:09 (Reply)
unfortunately, i couldn't verify who george is, or if he's really close to smart gilas.

not saying that what he's saying isn't true, of course.

It is the true with big T!

If you're really close from someone at Smart Gilas as you've claimed, why don't you ask them as to why they don't want to come out and explain their side. The true is , Noli E. and his cohorts are more interested in attending press conferences and issuing press releases than making sure his coach and players are getting their salary on time.
#13.2.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 jimmy o. on 2010-02-23 23:24 (Reply)
that is correct! why not let noli eala explain all the money matters so everything is settled. hard to believe that smart company will renege on their obligations.
#13.2.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Jas on 2010-02-25 19:01 (Reply)
Totally shate your observation.Noli Eala has a lot of explanation to do.He abused MVP's generosity.
He made unnecessary expenses with all his school
friends that he put in SBP.
This group of parasites was receiving money for
nothing! They were even not obliged to come to
the office like all employees have to!They were
visiting the office occasionally, few times a month
(that's how busy they are)!No team trip could had be
done without them! They were getting bonuses on
the team's sweat, like they have something to do
with it.
The only role they had,was to kiss ser Noli'a ass!
But the good news according to the papers is that
they are out of the picture.
No more parasites living on MVP's expense. Finally!

jamal and noli should guest in showbiz central and settle the issue in intriga crossfire lol =) moral of the story: BS begets BS period
#16 george on 2010-02-14 16:11 (Reply)
If you are close to someone doesn't mean you can tell him what to do.Probably there are things that should be resolved, concerning termination of the contract with Jamal.I am sure, there are reasons.Jamal is big manipulator.I read his answer.I am interested if coach will answer to him(cauze he sayed he won't write anymore)concerning his assistants.I know that Jamal is not telling the truth, because coach never speak about his assistants with the players, specially with Jamal. He heard this from someone else, maybe someone who wants to be an assistant. But it was expected that he would try to pick up new fights with the people.I agree with the coach, worst person I ever saw. And,he got updated from his frien Chillders, who stayed here with him and praticed with the team.
#16.1 jaemark on 2010-02-14 16:20 (Reply)
the problem is, right now, you're just an anonymous commenter. unlike Gilasinsider, whom i have identified as someone close to the Gilas organization, i have no idea who you are, and as such, i can't vouch for the accuracy of your comments.

you could, of course, drop me an email and let me know who you are ;)
#17 george on 2010-02-14 17:33 (Reply)
How do you think I know all this? I can't tell you who am I close to,because I don't know if that might make a problem to that person.I also know that there are official reports from doctors in Dubai and Manila that confirm Jamal had no injury.Would be a normal thing to you that you don't want to keep a good player? Of cors not.No one gets fired without the reason.Everyone saw his performances,or better nothing that he showed!
#17.1 jaemark on 2010-02-14 17:54 (Reply)
like i said, you may be right... but without any proof, there's really no way of knowing. there's no way to distinguish you from any other anonymous commenter on the web, nor is there any way to verify that what you're saying is true.

you could be telling the whole truth, or you could just be making stuff up. i have no judgment either way. i have no way of knowing, unfortunately.
#18 george on 2010-02-14 20:02 (Reply)
This is not about me.It's about the truth in this matter. I just wanted to contribute the truth. But if you don't want it,fine by me.
And one more thing for Jamal, from the moment he signed the contract he did't play any game in PBA and in 20 days managed to have false back injury, diarrehia, and false knee injury and with all this excusees didn't practice. And people Jamal should understand what you think of him,so write that he can knows.
#18.1 jaemark on 2010-02-14 20:10 (Reply)
i'm not saying i didn't want it. i'm saying... without verifying your identity, it's hard to know where you're coming from.
#18.2 j_myxx | Patay Ang Butiki on 2010-02-14 22:27 (Reply)
dude, you dont have to reveal who you are on the comments. you could always just email jaemark with request that you be kept anonymous. then jae could just vouch for you here while not revealing your name to the general public.
#19 nottosmartgilas on 2010-02-14 23:05 (Reply)
@george you can claim or tell the so called truth about this issue all u want ,but if you continue to remain anonymous, all your statements here are "tsismis". BTW , do you know what "tsismis" means? It's оговарање in Serbia.
#19.1 george on 2010-02-15 11:14 (Reply)
Dude, wat's the point with tsismis.Don't understand.Whatever, you hate Gilas,I like Gilas and my Gilas friends.Ko na finished kahapon with the comments or if you better like with tsismis.
#19.2 Jason on 2010-02-15 14:01 (Reply)
What's the fuss about George? He might be a friend of a friend, but everything he wrote, was already posted.Jamal Sampson's behaviour well described in Mr.Toroman's letter, and about salaryes being late forthe others too,we heard from gilasinsider earlier. So nothing new!
#20 kuplet on 2010-03-01 18:59 (Reply)
It was nice to hear the side of Coach Toroman but sadly I believe that Smat and the SBP should come out with a formal statement. They should clean the air and show that they have kept their side of the bargain.

Sampson is a PRO basketball player, he plays for money so if there is truth that some of his paychecks were delayed then you cannot blame him.

Don't get me wrong, I love Philippine basketball and I still trully believe we are the best in Asia. I just don't trust the suits, history is not on their side(sad to say).
#21 The Derby Ace King on 2010-04-19 12:07 (Reply)
anyone who expect jamal to be patriotic of the phil flag is stupid, do not compare him to his fellow gilas player. he is an import, import gets paid to play, now if his demand is no pay no play, let him go, the problem is not with him anymore, it's with those people who offered him a contract to play, jamal said everything right, sbp have done everything wrong. playing basketball is his job, those who are mad at him, try applying for a job that doesn't give any compensation.
