Jamal Sampson speaks on Smart Gilas and the SBP

A few weeks ago, I got an email from a curious source: Smart Gilas import Jamal Sampson. He took issue with an item I posted about his performance in China, where I quoted a ShamSports report calling him “a pretty awful offensive player.” Sampson said that during the season in question, when he averaged a paltry 10 points and 10 rebounds, he was playing with a hamstring injury. He also pointed out that in a previous season in China, he dominated the CBA, leading the Liaoning team to the finals, while averaging upwards of 20 points and 20 rebounds. One report on Eurobasket even called him “arguably the most expensive and impressive import in CBA history.”

Contrary to reports, Sampson said that he is still under contract with Smart Gilas, even as he is working to get a release, with a bigger offer in China waiting for him. In a series of emails to Fire Quinito, Sampson wrote about the problems he has encountered with Smart Gilas.

As always, this blog is open to any response from the SBP and Smart Gilas regarding this matter.

On his current situation:

“Under my contract, I got the month of February off, so I’m back home, but still under contract with [the SBP]. They won’t let me out of my contract, but I keep reading they wanna get rid of me. The team tried their hardest to convince me to stay and work it out, and try to make a deal work last week before I left. I’m still owed money from December, we are in February now, and I haven’t gotten it all.”

On the Middle East trip:

“While we were in Qatar, before we even went to Dubai, I asked to be released, and they told me they would, right after the Dubai trip, but that hasn’t happened.

“December’s payment that was owed to me was late. Under my contract, they owed me a payment by January 1st, no later, well before we left for Qatar and Dubai. If it wasn’t paid, my contract states that I didn’t have to play or practice. I wasn’t obligated to play in Qatar or Dubai.

“I tried to play through the injury because I like the guys on the team. They expected me to go out and risk my knee, while I haven’t even been paid from the first month. It’s February right now, and I’m still owed money I should have got in December from the first month I was on the team.”

On his contractual problems with the SBP:

“The team didn’t meet numerous contractual things. I had a bigger deal in China, but the team wanted to keep me so they kept upping their offer to meet, that’s why the process of me signing took so long. Unfortunately, from the beginning all those things put in the contract to get me to stay weren’t met, late and missed payments, and other things promised in the contract couldn’t be delivered.”

On issues with the SBP organization:

“You have a lot of people doing jobs that they are unqualified to be doing. The whole program is unorganized, and other people in the organization feel the same as me, and have told me it was gonna be like this from the beginning, but won’t speak up now ‘cause they don’t want to lose their job.

“For example, look at the assistant coaching staff, show me qualifications to be coaching a national team. What serious level coaching experience do they have? How is someone in their life under 5 feet who never played in the post in their life gonna be a big man coach and show me stuff? Someone under 5 feet can be a great coach, don’t get me wrong, but to be a big man coach and have never played in the post or even played high level ball? C’mon now.

“I asked to be released because I could see how unorganized and unprofessional it was. When you start off the first month not being paid right, that’s a tell-all. Stuff with my condo weren’t handled right. I slept on the floor in Manila for 5 days with no bed, that’s how unorganized things are.”

On SBP executive director Noli Eala’s motivation:

“I was told by numerous sources that on a team retreat Noli said to the team, he started this program only to get back at the PBA for what they did to him. That right there says enough. This whole thing wasn’t even started for the right reasons.”

On Coach Rajko Toroman:

“The players are treated like kids by Coach Toroman. Just like [former import] CJ [Giles] was blamed for taking the team out on a wild night. The players are from the age of 19 to 25, they are grown men, no one made them do anything. Toroman just goes by what the SBP tells him, he doesn’t know what happens behind the scenes, with payments and other contractual obligations not being met.”

UPDATE: A very interesting response from commenter Gilas Insider, who I know for a fact is a Gilas insider: “i don't like to say bad stuff bout Jamal cause he's my friend. It still is disappointing that he didn't play but of course when it comes to all these salary stuff, that's behind the scenes and we dont know much. BUt what i do know is that, it's not just him who doesn't get paid on time. Sometimes the other guys also don't get their salaries on time, and believe me, they need that salary more than he does, but that doesn't really keep them from playing.”

damn, these are pretty big revelations. nevertheless, this doesn't stop me from rooting for the team.

forgive my doubt, but i have a nagging feeling these accusations, albeit probably true, did not come from sampson himself, but from someone else within the gilas organization. i mean, with his short stint, that seems to me to be a lot inside info. either way, sadly, this shows a lot about the gilas management.
#1.1 jaemark on 2010-02-09 20:44 (Reply)
i don't think criticizing the sbp management (as i have, many times) precludes anyone from rooting for the team. neither does this. like any other pinoy basketball fan, i would love to hear a reply from the sbp, and if there's a problem, they ought to fix it.

anyway, the emails came directly from jamal. remember, he was with the team during the Middle East trip, that's a significant amount of time to spend with them.
#1.1.1 spectator_00_ on 2010-02-09 21:23 (Reply)
this is really sad.

which brings me to think, could toroman's too rigid a system be contributing to sbp finding it hard to keep an import? giles, to me as well as to many, was really a perfect fit for the team; he seemed intent on moving here as well. but toroman couldn't just tolerate his off-court activities.

i'm interested to know how he's doing with al-riyadi right now, and how his coach is handling him.
#1.1.1.1 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-10 08:24 (Reply)
I don't think that Coach Toroman's system is the problem that is why they can't hire imports. It is just a matter of failing to find a great players. Great players is defined as somebody with both immense talent and good attitude. One cannot exists without the other. Aside from that, not all goals and objectives by the SBP are obtained at an instant. Some of them take time before they are reached.

Let me refresh your memory, you fired Giles
because he was coming stoned even at the game.
It really is sad!

Its hard to tell if this is true. How are sure that this is indeed Sampson? And how did he think about sending you an email? Haha. But I wont be surprised if this is indeed true. haha. I actually liked him over Giles but Gilas did such a good job in making him look like the bad guy. haha. I hope we'll eventually find out whos telling the truth

i wouldn't be too hard on Sampson for not playing if he weren't getting paid. the guy could get injured and he could lose his living...

Interesting that it happens to other members of the team, too. that is a problem.

#5 Kebs on 2010-02-09 23:47 (Reply)

#5.1 jaemark on 2010-02-10 01:57 (Reply)

#5.1.1 Kebs on 2010-02-10 16:09 (Reply)
Diretsahan na lang sana, "no pay, no play", ika nga.

Pwede silang idemanda nito.
#5.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-02-10 16:13 (Reply)
#5.1.1.1.1 Kebs on 2010-02-10 20:00 (Reply)
Kaya nga, sana hindi na lang siya sumama as a form of protest. He could have opted not to join the trip to send a stronger message to the management. When he agreed to join them--I'm assuming he agreed, because he DID board that plane en route to Qatar--he's acknowledging the fact that the he is STILL a part of the team, though he already filed for an appeal to be released.

I understand your points, you've argued his case in a very convincing manner, yet I'm still having a hard time sympathizing with this guy.

Off topic: Nagiging paborito ko na tong blog mo. I really like your writing style. :p

You did not answer his main question. How did you confirmed that it was jamal indeed who write that e-mail? or if that was his e-mail indeed?
FYI, e-mails, just like fascimile, are not admissable in a court of law unless you have actual proof that they received by/from them or by/from their official representation.

#6 ck on 2010-02-10 00:54 (Reply)
With the PLDT group's various acquisitions in the past months and MVP's sponsorships to other sports, it is not surprising for Gilas to have a tight budget. I don't know if it's anything serious but the team is scheduled to play a number of international games this year. For the players, having their salaries delayed for a couple of months is like giving out a loan to the company. The management should take better care of their cash flow.
#6.1 jaemark on 2010-02-10 01:59 (Reply)
no, there's absolutely no excuse for Smart Gilas players not to receive their salaries on time. zero. zilch. nada.

it's an embarrassment to Smart as a corporation that this happens, and if it's true, they need to make the situation right.
#7 qwertyasdf on 2010-02-10 02:09 (Reply)
can you at least publish in full the said email of sampson? and not in the structure you presented them. and if he was reacting to your blog, why email you when he can just write a comment. that way he can clear his name for all to see. that would be better i think for him. say, what if you decided not to post his email? does he feel like you're going to appreciate him better if he emailed you directly instead?

hmmm.... so now youre like email buddies huh?
#7.1 jaemark on 2010-02-10 03:08 (Reply)
actually, those are pretty much the salient points of his emails. all i did was to clean them up and present them in a more readable way for readers of my blog.

i don't get what your problem is regarding him emailing me directly instead of posting a comment. a lot of people send me email for feedback instead of posting comments.
#7.2 Bonel Balingit on 2010-02-10 03:57 (Reply)
It's also just as easy to pretend you're someone you aren't -- such as a certain handsome kapre -- on the comments page as it is to create a fake email account. Personally, I would trust an email to be coming from a legit source over an online comment. Of course, I would seek proof from the emailer, as I suspect Jaemark did, before publishing anything.
#8 mrskasica on 2010-02-10 03:59 (Reply)
If this indeed is true, then I'm disappointed with how Smart-Gilas is being managed. Maybe this is why they're having problems acquiring those other college players. I agree that a contract is a contract. You should be compensated for the work that you do. What happens if you get injured?

I hope the Gilas management responds to Sampson's statements. I'm interested in what they have to say.

“I was told by numerous sources that on a team retreat Noli said to the team, he started this program only to get back at the PBA for what they did to him. That right there says enough. This whole thing wasn’t even started for the right reasons.”

Kasalanan na naman ni Noli...LOL
Seriously, this is a serious accusation if not very disturbing message. Based on Noli's tweet in the past, may paghuhugutan. Hopefully, politics will be taken out of the picture in order to regain Asian basketball supremacy.
#9.1 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-10 08:41 (Reply)
You are right. Politics has no place in the SBP. If they plan to reach their ambitious goal of reachign their goal of getting a slot in the 2012 London Olympics, unity among SBP officials has to be set in place and politics has to be set aside for it a fan once said," Politics and sports don't mix"!!!
#10 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-10 09:08 (Reply)
The SBP is still in its infancy stage that is why it there is a lot to be desired of from this organization. I expect improvements to happen in the years to come. Besides, I do believe that the organization is sincere in restoring basketball supremacy in Asia and uniting all the basketball organizations in the Philippines through its hardwork and sincerity. Expect more from the SBP in the years to come.
#11 workhorse3 on 2010-02-10 10:52 (Reply)
I hope this issue won't be used by BAP (headed by Pichay and my God, someone remove Graham Lim please) to claim that SBP is doing a bad job. Baka magsumbong na naman sa FIBA yan. They almost sabotaged the 2007 RP-SMC team back then by reporting to FIBA about the presence of Fil-Ams in the line-up (that didn't make the news but this issue was really a distraction).

This Jamal issue aside, I think SBP is doing a far greater job than the BAP with the formation of national teams and grassroots development (headed by Compton).

Smart Gilas is just one side of SBP's functions. I think we shouldn't generalize SBP as a whole by just this Jamal fiasco. But just like any other curious Filipino, I'd like to hear what SBP has to say and correct whatever mistake they committed.
#11.1 jaemark on 2010-02-10 10:57 (Reply)
that's true, sbp isn't just smart gilas. there are other programs in the organization, such as eric altamirano's youth program. i've praised the effort of that group effusively in this blog.

the problem here is that, for the past year, the people managing the smart gilas program has also been the people at the top of the sbp leadership. if there are isssues here, they ought to be accountable. if they're not accountable, they're no different from the terrible bap leadership.

Jamal is dissatisfied with the conditions as an RP Smart Gilas player. The SBP just has to respect his decision and let him go. We can't force him to play for the national team if he doesn't want to.

Noli did this to get even with the PBA? Funny cuz It had the opposite effect. Tuwang tuwa ang PBA sa SBP dahil hindi na sila obligated na tumulong sa pag-assemble ng RP team. it's MVP/Eala's problem now.

I think both sides have their faults to show for. If Jamal says he's injured then that should be verified so we'll know officially if he's injured and can't play competitive ball. If what he's saying about his pay not being given on time and this info verified by other sources and other players not getting paid on time as well then that should be looked into. If there are team officials, assistant coaches who shouldn't be there then they should be taken out. Smart Gilas has to shape up on all fronts so we can have a competitive National Men's Basketball Team. Otherwise, we can just forget it.
