The heart of the matter

You know how Purefoods fans like me keep harping that the team’s coach, Ryan “The Genius” Gregorio, can’t coach? Well, here’s all the proof you need. Asked how the team pulled through in the do-or-die game in the best-of-five quarterfinals series against Rain or Shine, he responded with his usual cliché: “I just told my players to throw away the statistics and the results of the last two games and simply bring to tonight’s table a big heart. That’s what they did.”

Purefoods star James Yap, however, had a different take on things. The hotshot guard had a difficult time in games 3 and 4, but broke out of his slump to score 28 points in the deciding game. According to him, it was because of a technical adjustment he had to suggest to his coach: “Sinabi ko kay coach na bigyan ako ng bola sa loob ng three points para dalawa, tatlong dribble lang nasa basket na ko. Dati kasi malayo ang tanggap ko ng bola kaya nakaka-collapse agad sa akin ang depensa.”

It worked too, because Yap did his best Vergel Meneses impersonation last night, slicing through the lane repeatedly for twisting layups and finding cutting teammates when he was mobbed. It’s a good thing he spoke up, because all his coach ever seems to talk about is heart. At this point, I really don’t want to hear anything about heart, unless we’re talking about Heart Evangelista.

Heart Evangelista

Does any other PBA team win games in spite of its coach?

Here’s the thing: before I was a fan of anything else, I was a fan of Purefoods as a kid, and I still am, despite the ridiculous (and frankly, kinda gay) nicknames like Tender Juicy Hotdogs, Corned Beef Cowboys, Carne Norte Beefies, Chunkee Giants, and T

the big heart decollete looks photoshop-enhanced. i'd want to see the pf TEAM play in the finals.

and although james yap got a lot of hits and the refs were too shy to call fouls against his defenders, Purefoods did not walk away. take that, Chot, MVP & Walk N Text!

BTW, ganda ni Heart! ;;)

Iwasan lang ng PF players especially Roger and Kerby ang masyadong OA sa mga bad calls at wag mainit ang ulo sa game...ibang depensa na ang semis, mas maraming hard fouls!

purefoods forever!

The Cleveland Cavaliers have the best record in the NBA at 41 wins-11 losses despite of inabilities of Mike Brown to coach. His play is simple - pass the ball to King James. LeBron either shoots the ball, drives to the hook or sets up his teammates.

Purefoods have made it to the semifinals despite of inabilities of RG to coach. The PF coach has two plays - either pass the ball to Kirby or pass the ball to James Yap. These two players either sets up their other teammates or shoots the ball either by driving inside or taking the outside shot.

Brown and RG are just lucky to have the presence of Jameses in their line-up to make up for their lack of talent as tactians. LOL

With regards to another PBA team that is winning in spite of its coach, there is San Miguel Beer with Coach Siot at helm.

That is why the Purefoods vs SMB semifinal series is very interesting. Siot vs RG is a good match-up. The loser will resort to either FireSiot or Fire RG. LOL

how can you say that siot isn't a good coach? he's done a far better job at coaching than veteran coaches chot reyes or jong uichico. next to tim cone, siot's probably the most fundamentally sound coach in the PBA today. don't even start on yeng guiao.
#6.2 jaemark on 2010-02-10 11:58 (Reply)
i'd trade ryan for siot any day. i'd even throw in a year's worth of hair products for ryan's use.

I still think that the San Miguel Beer has underachieved under Coach Siot. If he is at least a good coach, he should have won at least 5 to 7 championships considering the talent that SMB has.Not only 3 championships.

Don't think that I don't like him.He was a schoolmate of mine at UST. He was a part of the that led our school to a UAAP championship to four straight years from 1993-1996.

Coach Siot has still a long way to go to prove that he is a good coach and a longer road to walk on becoming a great coach. But he is only 37 years old. He still can transform himself into becoming the best coaches in the PBA in the years to come.

Definitely, he is a lot better than RG!!!! No question about it.

please. san miguel's vaunted lineup is overrated. up until trading for arwind santos this season, they didn't have anyone who could contend for the mvp.

of course, andun si danny i. at si danny s., pero nirarayuma na yung mga yun.
#6.2.1.1.1 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-12 06:12 (Reply)
I think I have proven my point in Game 1 between SMB and my favorite team - Purefoods. The Beermen beat the Hotdogs 99-83. Danny S and Danny I together with Arwind Santos make the team look unbeatable.
#6.2.1.1.2 vince on 2010-02-19 07:15 (Reply)
i agree. and they've been haunted by so many injuries. they're lucky arwind's remained bullstrong and healthy, despite his wiry appearance.
#7 KG21 on 2010-02-10 15:06 (Reply)
Bad trip! Mukhang hahaba pa ang coaching job ni RG sa Purefoods, umabot sila ng semis...
#7.1 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-10 15:34 (Reply)
Forever na iyang coaching job ni RG. He can't get fired because he is bulletproof. Pang 22nd century na ang bulletproof vest niyan. He will only be replaced if either he quits as PF coach or the franchise disbands.
