Random thoughts from a Smart Gilas insider

Like I said a few posts back, I welcome any insight about the Smart Gilas squad, given that a lot of people really care about the promising team. A Smart Gilas insider (I know who he is, but for obvious reasons couldn’t disclose the identity) left a very interesting comment on my last post about the team. I’m republishing the most interesting parts of his comment here for more people to see:

Mac Baracael has been playing at the four position most of the time and he has been way more effective there when compared to Japeth. Japeth hasn't been rebounding too well and has been making good decisions. Plus he has not been playing good defense.

As for the PBA players, no coach Raijko is not interested in Asi at all. He was simply using him as a measure for the size that he needs. the only PBA player that he really wants (which i think finally came out publicly today) is kelly williams because he would be a perfect fit for the 4 position because of his rebounding and shooting.

As for the guards, Toroman is completely happy with all of them and he is just waiting for Lutz to come then his lineup for guards will be complete. I know a lot of people dont like Tiu, but when he averages the most minutes on the team, that says alot for a guy who is so short. Watching their games, it would seem that it is his fault when the guards score but truth is, he does everything coach Raijko asks him to on defense. he follows their defensive philosophy to the letter and often enough it is due to his teammates' mistakes in following their help side rules on defense that lead his man to score. He is just the leader of the team and sticks his team together. A true role player indeed.

Baracael has been great and Jvee Casio has been very good too. Barroca is actually not playing so well anymore and is getting berated at times for not passing the ball and setting the plays up properly.

A very big mistake should GILAS get Williams ..... Williams doesnt have a clue what to do with the basketball on a half-court / isolation setup.

Dont get me wrong, he does rebound a ton of the defensive end .... but I just dont trust this guy on offense.

Better get Dillinger instead ..... can bring down the ball during pressure defenses.

why dont you trust him on offense? hes likely more reliable than japeth (your number 2 option at the 4) on that end. hes a pretty good finisher. he occasionally flashes some range. at the very least, he'll be good for a couple of putbacks off of offensive boards. plus, the contributions off the boards, yeah.

jared's good but he's more of a wing, so you'd still be playing an undersized baracael at the 4. which means they'd still struggle rebounding.

at the very least, kelly raises your teams talent level a couple of notches. it all comes down to whether a pba player can actually find the time to gel with the gilas boys despite his pro commitments.
#1.1.1 jong on 2010-02-03 08:54 (Reply)
Williams only crashes the offensive boards when there is the clear opening for a putback, slam or tip-in ... the streaking-in kind of rebounds.

He's not your Hatfield or Carey type who goes after everything within their vicinity.

Williams is a good finisher, but International games are primarily setup or half-court game and this is one aspect of Williams' game that is almost non-existent.

He never developed his bread & butter plays for the half-court game. Besides I never trust anyone with that kind of high arching shot.

Maybe Toroman would have a role for Williams, hence his desire to get him.

But right now, given GILAS' current line-up, I'd prefer Dillinger or maybe a Cardona even.
#1.1.1.1 j_myxx | Patay ang Butiki on 2010-02-03 10:54 (Reply)
yeah, jared and macmac are good picks, but that still leaves you with the same deficiencies that the current gilas lineup will have. sure both would probably be upgrades over chris tiu and marcio lassiter, but you'd still be playing undersized guys like baracael and ballesteros at the 4 and 5. you, know pending the entry of the naturalized player. i think kelly is a better fit, giving you the luxury to slide some guys down one position to matchup better.
#1.2 Elmo on 2010-02-03 13:31 (Reply)
Bro if there is one PBA player to reinforcs the GILAS its WILLIAMS. If you Know your Basketball you Know What im sayin. its Inthe ball Of The Sta. Lucia team to be Patriotic.
#2 jp manahan on 2010-02-03 01:00 (Reply)
basically, whoever we naturalize, it will be a big man.

we need skilled people who can fit toroman's system. i trust in him.

if nate robinson was only a foot taller...
#3 gilasinsider on 2010-02-03 11:16 (Reply)
cardona is definitely not a fit for this system. when Toroman was training the TNT team, Cardona would constantly get lost in the plays and didnt care much for them. he always broke them much to the chagrin of coach Raijko. And Cardona tells me, "di para sakin yung ganito, bwakaw ako eh. Bigay nyo lang bola sa akin tapos ako na bahala" and i dont think that will work in the international system. that is precisely the reason why we havent been winning. Don't get me wrong though i love macmac and hes a good pal but for the international game it wont work.

Dillinger is a guard who is athletic but cant really shoot the ball well on a consistent basis and also has terrible decision making and makes a lot of boneheaded plays, i dont think he would be a good fit. Coach Toroman trained them for some time and believe me, if he really liked Dillinger then he would already be in the team.

Williams doesnt need to be an isolation type of guy. THat's precisely what the system of Coach Raijko does. It will put the guys in good positions to succeed on the offensive end. Besides, eh doesnt really need offense from Kelly. It's the rebounding he needs. If jason Ballesteros can score ten points from time to time, what more Kelly Williams?
#3.1 jong on 2010-02-03 13:30 (Reply)
Like I said, Im all for it should Toroman select a specific role for Williams.

But should Williams be given free reins in offense, like in Santa Lucia, im afraid it would be a bad choice.
#4 j.tag on 2010-02-03 20:17 (Reply)
let's just get gabe freeman to naturalize.
#5 gilasinsider on 2010-02-03 21:13 (Reply)
gabe freeman is too small. that would defeat the purpose. we need someone at least 6'10 not someone who is 6'6 or something.

yeah, no one has free reins a la pba style anyway in toroman's offense.
#5.1 trix on 2010-02-04 19:25 (Reply)
Nobody said Toroman will get Kelly to make him the Carmelo Anthony of Smart-Gilas. His talent and versatility make him an ideal fit. Kelly is such a great matchup defensively against the forwards of the international game. Kelly also raises the talent level of Gilas and I think his talent is compatible with toroman's system. He had so much success playing alongside Kerby Raymundo back in 2007. I would say he was the 2nd best player of the team back then. He wasn't getting his points from iso plays. Most came from hustle plays and from Jimmy's penetration. Maybe a Kelly-Mac combination at the forward positions will be enough for Toroman. There are some concerns about Kelly's inclusion. Will he gel with team? Will he have a "You bitches need me because Im a pro" attitude? And Im pretty sure Toroman said Japeth was one of the key players for Gilas back when they were trying to acquire him but right now hes struggling in the system. Maybe the same thing might happen with Kelly. Toroman's all praises now but he might eventually put Kelly at the end of his bench. And of course will the PBA and SLR to go? If they do, Im sure the whole year schedule will take a toll on Kelly's body.

That's a great point, had Toroman liked someone from TNT, Im sure he would have requested for him already. I really like Jared but he might be too wild for Toroman. But as far as I can remember, Mac Baracael was pretty wild back then when he was in FEU. Full of energy but sometimes a bit too out of control and would usually take shots that would make his coach lose a lot hair. But right now he's one of Toroman's mainstays. mac Mac cardona? Toroman doesnt like those type of guards. I think he'd rather have Derek Fisher than Rajon Rondo. Shane Battier over JR Smith. Gabe Norwood is a more controlled version of Jared but might be too passive. Im not sure if thats what Toroman likes.

I don't like the idea of putting 3 pros on the team if they cant be with team all year long. Maybe 1 or 2 might be enough. Players going in and out of the team might destroy the chemistry they have worked so hard to build. Plus, I would still like to see guys like Casio and Ababou to play a significant role in the team. Those kids are such a big part of the identitiy of the team. Gabe and Kelly might be enough. Would love to add Arwind but he has struggled last year in the international game and he might be too thin.

Hey gilasinsider! Who are you? haha. I have no idea who you are. Haha. And how can i get a Gilas jersey?? Can you give me one please! haha.
#5.1.1 gilasinsider on 2010-02-04 23:43 (Reply)
cant reveal my identity otherwise i might as well put my name. haha Don't worry pretty soon there will be a gilas merchandise.. well hopefully soon! and we can all get our stuff

Gabe is a no-no for this team. Raijko realizes he needs a rebounder because japeth isn't as good as a rebounder as we all thought. dont get me wrong. the potential is still there but the decision making and his basketball sense is pretty off. Plus at his height he should be averaging about 8 rebounds per game and there are games when he gets like 1 or 2? how can that be!

WEll if there is one thing Coach Raijko said that i think should be shared, it's the fact that he says we can make 5 national teams for this country and they will all be equal in strength, unlike other countries (except say maybe China, and duh USA?) where they have a main core group of guys and that's it. And the fact that they are getting older is working to our favor. although i still am terribly worried about china. i love yao ming but for once i hope he doesn't play! Well, that's how talented coach raijko thinks we filipinos are. he says in terms of talent no match yung ibang teams, even that Iran team which he guided to the championship. WE just really lack the height.

I am in a philippine cultures class at my college and one of our assignments is to interact with someone outside of the classroom that deals with the philippines. I am very interested and intrigued by sports so I figured this blog was a great choice to follow. I was just wondering what some of the sport's related issues are that are happening in the philippines?
#7 gilasinsider on 2010-02-05 00:59 (Reply)
haha if nate robinson wer a foot taller? i dont think he needed to be a foot taller, trust me if he were in this team he'd probably be their best rebounder already the way he leaps! like a while ago, he just grabbed 6 rebounds! and this is against nba players haha

derek fisher vs rondo combination is not good at all. barroca reminds me of rondo except he doesnt pass the ball at all and cant pass well, he's pretty erratic too but toroman likes him. casio reminds me of billups, of course without the build to post up other guards but the way he plays and his demeanor too.

and this interest of toroman for kelly started when he heard that kelly was the one who was interested to play for gilas, and when he was able to just talk to kelly, but of course kelly wouldnt say anything like that in public and toroman wouldn't either because kelly is under contract.
#7.1 spectator_00_ on 2010-02-05 11:21 (Reply)
sir, how's the recruitment of junmar fajardo going?
#7.2 trix on 2010-02-06 00:02 (Reply)
What do mean by "derek fisher vs rondo combination is not good at all"? I meant it in a way that I think Toroman would rather have a Derek Fisher than a Rajon Rondo. I think he's the type of coach that likes guys who are perceived as better players because of the system they are playing in not the ones that thrive when there isn't a system. He had a chance to tab Chris Ross over less athletic guys like Casio and Tiu but he chose the the 2 local collegiate rivals over the athletic Filam. And as j_myxx before said, Toroman might not like guys who can't shoot.

Barroca is more of top-of-key-jumper guy. Rondo is more of an quick do-it-all PG. Monta Ellis as Barroca perhaps?

I know Japeth is struggling a little bit but is Toroman just being too impatient or is putting Japeth on the bench part of Toroman's process of developing Japeth?

Hows the import search? Glad to know they're looking into Alexander. I was hoping they'd consider him. Not a fan of Townes. Gilas might need someone who is not uberly talented but extremely hardworking. A guy like a poor man's version of Ben Wallace come to my mind. How about Sam Ekwe? Haha.
#7.2.1 gilasinsider on 2010-02-06 00:54 (Reply)
sorry i meant comparison not combination. my bad. haha there are some guys fit for the international game and some guys who arent. i'd say chris ross wouldnt exactly be the best fit. He's athletic compared to the filipinos but he loses that advantage against other countries who are bigger, stronger and faster than him. Same goes to the other athletic guys, when compared to the "smarter" less athletic guys like casio and tiu. They're so small, theyre not the fastest on their teams yet they still find ways to lead the team in scoring at times. Baracael is athletic but he's undersized and he's playing powerforward yet he still finds ways to score too. I think those are the guys toroman likes more, when compared to guys relying purely on their athletic ability

I haven't heard of their interest in Alexander. toroman told me he likes Barron or Dwayne Jones (i think he played for the Cavs a bit)

Junmar fajardo is not happening. His school won't release him so that's a sad story right there. I think Toroman hasn't been to patient. in fact he has been so patient. He practically started JApeth in all their games here, but during the times when he didn't play and they used Baracael as a power forward, the team became way more effective and everything went smoother. That's not being critical of Japeth though but it's more of giving credit to Baracael.

I heard Townes isn't 6'11 as our news says he is but more of something like 6'9 and he isn't exactly that skilled but the one good thing about him is that he's the one who wants to be here and he works hard. So i don't know if we'd take someone like that, or someone who is way better yet doesn't really wana be here or can't commit (a la Sampson).

I still am sad that CJ left, we've become pretty good friends and i think he's a good fit for the team. BUt oh well, no use crying over spilled milk right now. The team still has values that are more important than simply basketball and i respect their decision there.

I forgot to ask, isn't the Gilas management concerned that they do not have a playmaker at the SF position? Their guards aren't exactly playmakers so one in another position might help. A guy like Hedo comes to my mind. The 09 Magic didnt have a playmaker in their PG position but SVG used Hedo as his main ballhandler. Thats why I think either a Gabe or Jared could help. I know the system of Gilas doesn't need a lot of playmakers but when I look into their roster it seems like Barroca is closest to being a playmaker but he's not really known to create plays for other.

You said Toroman wanted a rebounder so is he considering Arwind? Was Nonoy baclao ever considered?
#8 trix on 2010-02-06 12:36 (Reply)
Sorry I think they're just looking into Alexander but not really interested. Dwayne Jones did play with Cavs and he played well for a 3rd stringer. From what I read Townes is a type of a player that should be playing at a higher level because of his talent. I think Gilas needs a guys who plays better than his talent and size suggests. How about a European import? Has Toroman considered that?
#8.1 gilasinsider on 2010-02-06 22:57 (Reply)
asked him about that european import since before, he says that the good guys in the european countries are already tied down and playing for their national teams at such young ages. sadly it's still just the Americans who have the most talented players and the size.

Update on Gilas this week, they lost to San Miguel by like 9 points after being up by as much as 17, but Lassiter and Tiu did not play and Ballesteros too.

They beat Alaska today by 1 point, a free throw by Japeth with no time left. Chris Tiu had 20 points 10 assists and 8 rebounds, Japeth had 11 points 13 rebounds and it was pretty nice to see that he was aggressive on the boards. but still had some defensive lapses and bad offensive decisions but their is that improvement and its nice to see. Lassiter was still missing cause they allowed him to take a vacation (i wonder why, especially since he needs to make up for lost time in training). The import townes played. He was okay, grabbing 11 rebounds and scoring i think 16 points but he was terrible on free throws and didnt look like he had a jumper. Seemed to be out of shape too because he was cramping up midway through the fourth and had nothing left in the tank by the last few minutes. Clutch shots by Casio, Barroca and Baracael too.

As for having a playmaker, i think seeing the likes of tiu and casio as unathletic automatically gives us the misconception that they arent play makers. BUt way back in their UAAP days, they were both always at the top in scoring for their teams and at the top in assists. And Tiu is leading the team in assists right now consistently so if that isn't play making then im not too sure. Baracael has suddenly learn to pass the ball way more and even Barroca too. And they can create for themselves pretty well, and Tiu and casio are the same, not with their athleticism but with their brains.

I think lassiter is also pretty good at creating, except he still has the "american" baller attitude type which has to be taken away from him and i think it will eventually. Plus with the arrival of Lutz real soon, they should definitely be complete in the 1-2-3 position. WEll, thats what coach says.
#8.1.1 trix on 2010-02-07 09:20 (Reply)
Yeah, they were great playmakers back in their collegiate years but can they still produce plays when its time for FIBA Asia? I was hoping someone like Stanley Pringle would have been invited because his shooting and quickness would have allowed him to create plays against any type of competition. I guess I'll just have to trust Toroman's system to allow guys like Casio to create plays.
#8.1.1.1 gilasinsider on 2010-02-08 00:05 (Reply)
they will. if there will be a problem with our team it will be our big men and not the guards. he keeps saying our guards are so much more talented than any other team in asia, even more talented than those in his iran team. you should have watched them play in the dubai tournament and watch more of their games..
#8.1.1.1.1 trix on 2010-02-09 14:31 (Reply)
i did catch the 4th quarter of their game against Al Riyadi and I think the problem for Gilas is their consistency of their execution. I think thats why they tend to give up a big lead in one game and mount a strong in their next. I think their success depends on how they can consistently execute Toroman's system or maybe how often they can execute their system to an extent that can they get a bucket or a stop. They dont need to be perfect. They just have to do enough to get Ws. Right now winning or losing doesn't matter but as the program goes along, I think we expect to see more Ws than Ls. They're doing quite well right now and I hope they will continue to improve and eventually topple the top teams in Asia.

Back to my point, sometimes the team can't execute their system at a level that can get a bucket. That was the case in the last 4 minutes of their against Al Riyadi (and also in their bad stretches in their other games). That's why most teams have a primary playmaker who they can give the ball to create a play out of nothing. The problem with all-pro teams before was that every single perimeter player was a playmaker and they resorted to isolation plays every single time. Now Im afraid that nobody in the Gilas team can create a play out of nothing. Tiu and Casio are great guys but these guys are great because of the system. What if the system isn't clicking all of sudden? Barroca's that guy but he hasn't been consistent after the FEU incident. So will it hurt the team if they added a perimeter player whom other teams will have to think of double teaming? Someone who can drive to the basket and get and And-1 play 3 times a game? Some like Jimmy, but not jimmy. Stanley Pringle? Why hasnt SBP gone after him? Paul Lee? But he'll have to do a lot of catching up. And I doubt UE will allow him to join the team. Norwood and Jared might not be enough. Lutz is still a shooter 1st but maybe at the Asian level, he'll be enough. An import will surely help solve this problem but I think we need a Jimmy Alapag type of a player.
#8.1.1.1.1.1 Gilasinsider on 2010-02-09 18:28 (Reply)
okay i get your point, but the thing is, if you've watched these other guys, playing for their own schools respectively, just putting a simple pick and roll for them (which is how practically everybody in the NBA do it too, save for Lebron, wade and kobe.. although they also do) could really pay dividends, but the thing is, coach raijko's system doesnt allow that. i'll honestly say that he isnt the best in coming up with last-second plays. and even if it were in the winning moments of the game, he still would order the guys to call a play and not just go one-on-one because that;s just his system.

and his philosophy why he doesnt necessarily have those "game-winning" plays is because he believes the game should already be won by the last 2 minutes. I don't really agree with him but he's got a point. They will continue to develop working with each other in the system and their team chemistry. Guys like Tiu and Casio are still able to create just by picking their spots when to create from the system.

btw, who is stanley pringle? haha Paul Lee, UE is the problem there, but like i said, toroman has already declared that he is satisfied very much with his guards and doesn't need anymore guards. He just needs big men. I mean we all have our own opinion, but based from his experience and knowledge, i'd say he probably would know if he needed that type of player that you say he needs. If he wanted one he would have gotten one. Remember, he was the one who chose these players personally.

I do think Rico Maierhoffer could have helped alot too in the four spot, but the thing is, (no matter what reason he or his manager gave) he just didn't want to play for DLSU anymore, which is why he just decided to go Pro. (playing for gilas would have given him no excuse to not play for la salle too, like all the other guys, and this is pretty accurate based on a lot of his friends :) )

hmm... so that explains his childlike amazement at tnt's game2 last-second alley-oop play.
