The week in Quinito Henson annoyance

In fairness to Quinito Henson, I respect and admire him as a writer. But he should stop being a commentator. Quinito is more effective as an analyst if he is being paired with a very effective anchorman like Sev Sarmenta and Ed Picson, who are obviously more experienced behind the mike than he is.
The problem is that Solar likes to have Chino Trinidad more for its boxing coverages compared to Sev, who is no slouch as a boxing commentator. Remember, Sev did Manny Pacquiao's fights when he and the Pacman were still with ABS-CBN.
I think Solar should send Sev for Pacquiao's next fight and let Chino be a joint analyst with Quinito.

i agree that Quinito writes very well... but as well as he writes, he does take a lot of shortcuts and the laziness shows in his work.
i dunno about Quinito improving his broadcasting... he's been broadcasting the PBA since 1982, and i would assume he'd started doing boxing commentary for that. about the only time i enjoy Quinito on the panel is when Ed Picson is with him, because Ed usually takes Quinito down a peg with his humor. too bad he's busy with his ABAP work. i miss him already.
i'm not as big a fan of Sev Sarmenta as you are; actually i like Chino Trinidad better (except for his batian portion during Pacquiao boxing matches). i think it's just a matter of taste, nothing against Sev in particular.
but i would argue that the best combo announcer-analyst combo in the pba over the years was Chino with Yeng Guiao. Yeng was Jeff Van Gundy before Jeff Van Gundy.

A sportswriter friend of mine told me that he was trying to interview Nonito Donaire after his win over Raul Martinez last Sunday when suddenly, Chino Trinidad came in and just approached Donaire. Naturally, my friend was pissed off.
The only thing I can say is that Chino is much too frank for his own good. I think he should stick to being the PBL Commissioner and helping find more teams for his shrinking league.
I respect Sev Sarmenta more as a sportscaster because I like the way he lends color to his play-by-play and uses a lot of nice words -- like his idol Joe Cantada. That's why I was happy when he got back to the PBA and left ABS.

btw, Mike Ochosa was really, really good. i'd read some of his stuff from business mirror and i saw him doing a commentary for a donaire feature on CS/9, but i had no idea he was that good on the broadcast panel. they really ought to send the guy to the Pacquiao fight. talk about a guy who knows his boxing, and who knows his Filipino fighters.
Solar taps Mike Ochosa to do the radio broadcast of Pacquiao's fights over DZBB, which is a GMA radio station.
He also hosted a boxing program, Fists of the Future, with Noel Zarate, for Solar Sports. They provided the English commentary for the Spanish commentators.

Quinito: "Viloria keeps getting hit with Solis' jabs, he should move around, instead of standing there."
