The (character) assassination of CJ Giles by the lackey Rick Olivares

During one of my first email exchanges with Manila Vanilla’s Rafe Bartholomew, when this blog was new, he cited as his favorite Quinito Henson moment a series of columns last year on ex-Sta Lucia import Lee Benson.

An ex-convict, Benson was part of an “inspiring” feature by Quinito titled “Against all odds”. Benson’s recovery, Quinito wrote: “If there’s anyone who knows what defying the odds is all about, it’s Benson.” Quinito then proceeded to detail how Benson managed to carve out a career as a professional basketball player despite serving 8 1/2 years in prison.

Less than two weeks later, Quinito had changed his tune. He called Benson the “worst headcase” ever among PBA imports, while transcribing the complaints of Benson’s erstwhile agent, Mike Gonzales, against the American.

Of course, because Benson was out of the country, it was open season for Quinito: “Things worsened when Benson had an altercation with a taxi driver whom he had contracted for three days to drive him around town two weeks ago. The scuttlebutt was on the third day, the driver missed Benson who got out of a nightclub very late and took another taxi to his apartment on Pioneer Street. The driver later went to the apartment and asked to be paid but Benson refused. The driver called for the police and Benson even wrestled a nightstick away from one of the responding officers.”

I’m mentioning this because, while the two-week turnaround time was extraordinary (and hilarious), the cycle of building them up and taking them down for imports is not uncommon for local sportswriters. In fact, just before the hiatus of this blog, it happened with Rick Olivares and former Smart Gilas import CJ Giles.

Last May, Olivares put out a puff piece on Giles, dramatically-titled “Soul Train: CJ Giles and the Road to Redemption.” Olivares described Giles as a terrific athlete with a fighting heart, and a positive guy who spends a lot of time in prayer.

I took him to task for it, pointing out how he basically ignored Giles’ inglorious record with his college teams; the import was suspended and then kicked out of the Kansas Jayhawks squad for various transgressions, before transferring to Oregon State, which was more of the same.

But those things didn’t make it into Olivares’ piece, of course, because it didn’t fit in with his narrative of how awesome the Smart Gilas program was, and how his buddy, SBP executive director Noli Eala, is such a genius for building it up. Olivares went on to write about how the SBP performed a background check on Giles, and found nothing amiss.

A few months later, Giles was reportedly booted out of the team for causing trouble. Funnily enough, it was Quinito who broke the news. Of course, as the unofficial spokesperson for the SBP, Olivares had to get his licks in. He wrote of Giles’s problems with Gilas coach Rajko Toroman: “Giles sorely tried Toroman’s patience. His late night escapades, while a little tolerable among some of the team’s management, was inexcusable for the Serb who preached discipline above all. When Giles’ younger brother Malcolm and then former college teammate at Oregon State, Wesley Washington, arrived in Manila, Giles would take them about town and would saunter back to his expensive condo unit in the wee hours of the morning. That affected his focus during practice and in one film viewing session on the eve of Gilas’ game versus Talk ‘n Text, the American fell asleep and Toroman finally blew his top.”

According to Olivares, it got even uglier, with Toroman suspecting that Giles was taking drugs. Olivares detailed Giles’s last days with the team: “Within days of his promising that he would be a changed man, in a drunken stupor, Giles beat up his younger brother that required several stitches. And after a practice where he seemed out of it, the team’s braintrust finally had enough. Giles was sent packing. It didn’t help that Giles didn’t pass the drug test. He nervously tried to stay away from it if not delay submitting urine samples. But once he did, he nervously muttered, ‘I’m going to fail this.’”

Incidentally, Olivares lists Quinito as a sportswriting idol. Figures.

Do you really believe that Noli Eala is asking Rick to write stuff that would make the Gilas program look good? I'm a big fan of the Smart-Gilas not because i like what they're doing but because they're the national team now and I don't have a choice. Noli does get a little (maybe not little) annoying but at least he cares for the flag. Are his intentions purely for the country or for himself? Maybe for himself but at least he's making an effort to put up a "competitive" team.

I hope Rick and Quinito will get a chance to read your blog. Haha. Those guys are not willing to admit their mistakes. But hey, at least those guys give us updates. Great "comeback" post.

"Do you really believe that Noli Eala is asking Rick to write stuff that would make the Gilas program look good?"

I don't know what the exact dynamics of their relationship are, but at this point, you have to take everything that Rick says with a grain of salt because of his biases.

I guess my problem with it is... ano ba 'tong mga 'to? Journalists ba, o PR people ng SBP? Why isn't anyone pointing these out?

Watch out for my next post on the topic, about questions for Gilas.

Its really sad to know that Eala is desperate enough to arrange such a relationship. There's no need for this. Even if we all hate Smart-Gilas, they are going to be the ones who will be playing for the country. Their goal is to win and not to be liked by everyone (They have Tiu for that one). And its not like they're making money out of this. I dont get it why he needs to do this.
#1.1.1.1 jaemark on 2009-12-02 01:02 (Reply)
hey, i dunno if it was Noli Eala who arranged this kind of relationship.

also, i wouldn't be so naive to think that no one's making money off this, or that Smart is doing this out of the goodness of its corporate heart.

btw... i like chris tiu. you don't?
#1.1.1.1.1 trix on 2009-12-02 20:54 (Reply)
How can they make money out of this? Ads? Damn it why don't they sell any Smart-Gilas merchandise? Im dying to have one..

Well, I hated him ever since he missed a layup that could have started a run for ADMU against DLSU in a Final 4 matchup. I'm not sure what year though. But ever since he graduated from ADMU, I sort of liked him again. But it makes me cry every single time Willie Miller scores so damn easily when Tiu is guarding him. I like his production but at what cost? The opposing 2-guard having the time of his life scoring?

What does a 4'11 guy with no speck of athletic ability whatsoever do when he's so desperate to get involved in sports? Write a blog dripping with sarcasm & bitterness. And oh, try to bring down other (much, much better) sportswriters along the way.

Your problem with them is that they're biased? Look in the mirror, midget. AS IF you're not biased. And don't give me that "but they're journalists & I'm just a blogger" crap.

You yourself admitted that you don't know the exact dynamics of the relationship between Olivares & Eala yet you easily jump to conclusions. For someone who works at PCIJ, you're A SHAME.

Whatever you do & whatever awards your blog wins, you can't change the fact that more people read & trust the writings of Mr. Olivares & Mr. Henson. They're infinitely better than yours. You're just a pathetic & bitter booger, oops, blogger. You even maligned someone in coming up with a name for your blog just to attract attention. That's just low - lower than your 4'11 frame. Tsk, tsk... Next time, try not to bring down others just to get the attention you desperately seek.

Let him say what he wants. He can say whatever he wants. Quinito Henson can bash him all he wants, but he doesn't. Jaemark bashes Quinito all he wants, its his life. I don't agree with every statement he says but I read his work because I enjoy it. If you don't like his work, no one is forcing you to read it. Chill dude. haha.

lol you have a great blog here! although I'm a fan of some of the people that you criticize, I still find your posts hilarious! just don't take it too seriously people. the point of the blog is to bring down these people in the first place!

i believe everyone is entitled to his own opinion. my own view is: every sports fan worth his salt can see through quinito, he is an expert in gathering data and sharing them, more so during the pre-internet years. but don't count on him for any sort of analysis, whether in depth or shallow, he just doesn't see the games on an analytical level no matter how much he tries. his writing has never been objective nor seriously substantial, more like glorified gossip columns, presumably having his own fan base apart from the serious sports guy.

rick is more of a real sports fan turned blogger. he has a tendency to harp on his connections/access to inside info, plus bait readers by saying that he knows more info about certain topics but cant tell, or that theres more to come but wala naman pala. his biases come from being a fan so its hard to fault him for that. he seems to be revelling in his new found fame and makes it a point to always say he's busy and has no time.

jaemark, well, he's got a great blog title...
