Pacquiao-Cotto 24/7: Trouble brews for Pacman in episode 1

Editor’s note: With preparations for the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto in full swing, Fire Quinito’s special guest critic, Alekos Orendain, takes a look at Pacquiao-Cotto 24/7.

Honestly, I could spend all day listening to narrator Liev Schreiber (aka Sabretooth in that piece of crap movie Wolverine: Origins) talk about the various analogies between life inside and outside the ring and not be bored. Add that to HBO’s top notch production values and throw in 2 world class boxers, Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto, into the mix and you’ve got yourself a show that’s pretty hard to screw up. This, however, will be Pacquiao’s 3rd time being featured in the groundbreaking series and for all of his… talents, there’s only so much about Pacman that you can show that can be thought of as interesting after 3 runs. So I was a bit worried that this time around, maybe the show wouldn’t be as compelling and dramatic as before.

Mother Nature stepped in to provide some drama Pacquiao’s training camp. Typhoons Pepeng and Ondoy feature prominently in the show, showing some pretty intense footage and adding a different kind of urgency to the fight and its outcome. Although some people may feel that too much time was spent dwelling on the typhoons and their aftermath (including a slew of slow-mo shots of military helicopters landing that would easily fit in any Michael Bay movie), I didn’t mind at all. Personally I think any publicity for victims of Ondoy and Pepeng, even if it’s in a show that promotes boxing, is good publicity.

More worrying for fans of the pound-for-pound champion though is that it seems that typhoons aren’t the only things causing trouble in training camp. Between his unwillingness to stick to trainer Freddie Roach’s instructions and the general douchebaggery his lackey Michael Koncz, Pac-fans everywhere might have reason to fear that maybe Pacquiao isn’t taking the fight as seriously as he ought to be.

Over at Cotto’s side at the world, HBO plays up the the focus and determination going on in Cotto’s camp against the confusion surrounding Pacquiao’s camp. And you know what? It’s really, really working. From what I’ve seen in the show, Cotto seems to be 100% business. It doesn’t help that Cotto is by far the meanest, toughest looking opponent Pac has ever faced. Seriously, Cotto looks about as far from a pasty, fun loving Englishman as Pacquiao is from being a good actor. The show even went as far implying that maybe Cotto should really be undefeated and was just a victim of some cheating at the plastered hands of Antonio Margarito, the man who handed Cotto his first and only loss.

By the end of the show a number of things were going through my mind. I worried about all the shit that seems to be going down in Pacquiao’s camp. I was still chuckling at a certain scene during the introduction of Cotto’s team members (they made a big splash in what is possibly the funniest and most unexpected introductory scene in the history of 24/7). More importantly, I was left wondering who has the hotter wife: Pacquiao or Cotto?

I just finished watching the 1st episode of 24/7. Why the f*ck is Manny Villar interrupting Pacquiao's departure from Baguio? I loved how Freddie Roach stepped-in to that "meeting".

Part of me wishes that Roach showed Villar less respect...

i'm a pacquiao fan and not a boxing enthusiast so i really love the series. it prepares me for the fight ahead. though after watching this episode, it made me update my status facebook status to---is afraid of cotto.

I do have a nagging feeling though that HBO is making Manny's training camp troubles seem more worrying than they really are. Probably to make the fight seem more exciting and dramatic. I personally think they don't need to though. Still it's great to hear how the series helps people understand more about both fighters :)

Hahaha. There was no debate in Pacquiao/Hatton as to who had the hotter wife right? :)

Am a big fan of pacquiao, a filipino too making a living in abroad. I always bougth HBO PPV everytime he fights for it brings me happiness to see him wins and proudly wavering up high the Philippine flag. Every day since they announce the PACQUIAO COTTO fight, I always have my own predictions that Manny will again emerge victorious and steal the title (very confident ) that COTTO is holding.
But after watching the first episode of the 24/7, I am now worried for him, he is not 100 % focused on his training. He will not succeed of being the first boxer who holds 7 title in 7 different weights. HE WILL NOT WIN. Because this time, he mixed his boxing carrier with POLITICS. But nevertheless, I still admire his courage and what he achieved as a boxer. If you only he listen to Freddie, you have a big chance....he's an expert who guided you achieved your goal. Coach Freddie said, two more fights after this and we could all retire happily. Now Im confuse of buying HBO PPV on his fight. Maybe I will just search any video on youtube the day after. I am so worried of his over-confidence.
NERVERTHELESS, GOOD JOB MANNY.

I think all Pacquiao fans have a nagging fear of his overconfidence (including me). At the same time, my gut feeling tells me that his training camp may be going better than what's being implied in 24/7. At least that's what they're saying in all the news articles I keep reading about his training camp. So if Freddy Roach, someone who's not inclined to mince his words, says things are going well, I'll believe him.

I really hope so....Im still excited tonight's 2nd episode on 24/7.
Only this production can take us a good peek on what's going on right now since coach Freddie strictly insisted that no more tourist's or fans on the training camp when they arrive here....
Go Manny......fight Marquez and Floyd and rest assured....you satisfied all of us and people back home will give you ( I think ) 80% chance as a Congressman where you should start there before moving up(like boxing). I do believe in his dedication....
Well! Good Luck buddy.
