From the Stands: PBA Finals talk with Chot Reyes & Paul Harris, TNT vs Alaska/Crispa

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on April 28, 2011 at 15:36 | Comments (19)
Chuck Araneta, Polo Bustamante and Carlo Pamintuan were in the house for game 1 of the Commissioners Cup Finals last night between Talk N Text and Ginebra. After taking in the action, literally, from the stands, they caught up with winning coach Chot Reyes and import Paul Harris after the game. The boys take on a different tack in this week’s old school and new school, comparing the powerhouse Texters squad to two different dynasties: the legendary Crispa Redmanizers and the winning machine that was the ’90s Alaska Milkmen.

Talk N Text versus Ginebra: 2011 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals forecast

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on April 27, 2011 at 17:51 | Comments (23)
Talk N Text - Ginebra

Here’s what’s going to happen: Talk N Text will win this series handily. Ginebra will be able to steal one or two games, probably through sheer force of will by Nate Brumfield or Mark Caguioa aided by the tactical brilliance of Jong Uichico. But while I will be rooting for the underdogs here in the finals, I can’t imagine this series ending without Manny Pangilinan and his Tropang Texters holding up their second straight championship trophy.

Juan Manuel Marquez vs Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao will be stepping into the ring against Shane Mosley in less than two weeks, but his promoter, Top Rank, has already potentially lined up the next opponent for the pound-for-pound champ: Juan Manuel Marquez.

Ginebrang Ginebra

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on April 25, 2011 at 19:01 | Comments (10)
On Twitter last night, I wrote that Ginebra’s win over Smart Gilas last night to advance to the finals followed the template of Gary Granada’s (and Bayang Barrios’) original song about the team, “Pag Nananalo Ang Ginebra”. The team trailed in the first half as their fans slowly fell into the grips of despair:

Ngunit ang aga nilang nagkalat,
bawat diskarte nasisisilat
Nagkasundo kaming magkakampi
na ang labo kasi ng referee
Ang barangay parang napeste,
natambakan agad kami ng bente
Parang bansa'y nagkaleche-leche,
at nareelect ang president

An apology

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on April 21, 2011 at 18:09 | Comments (17)
GMA News Online editor-in-chief Howie Severino emailed last Tuesday night, taking issue with a paragraph I wrote in my last piece about Krip Yuson’s plagiarism:

When I first called up Rey Joble to inform him about the apparent plagiarism, I asked him if he was going to file a complaint to his boss, GMA News Online editor-in-chief Howie Severino, about the matter. Joble responded in the negative; he said he was apprehensive about speaking up about the issue because he knew that Yuson was good friends with his boss, and that he was afraid that making a bigger deal out of it would jeopardize his career. He was ready to just let it pass if it meant that he could just go on with his job quietly – understandable, in this day and age, when most people, even sportswriters, are just concerned about making sure that there’s food on the table for their families.

PBA Rewind: Can Talk N Text Nation match the Crispa Redmanizers’ domination?

Posted by Jay P. Mercado on April 20, 2011 at 16:31 | Comments (11)
Editor’s note: PBA Rewind is a regular feature written by Jay P. Mercado that looks back on a piece of Philippine Basketball Association history.

The Talk N Text Tropang Texters are on a roll! After losing their opening game in the Commissioner’s Cup to the Smart Gilas national team 103-98, the Texters have gone on a tear, winning their next 10 games in near-dominant fashion. After ending the eliminations with an eight game winning streak, Talk N Text bulldozed the Air 21 Express in the first two games of their best-of-five semifinals series, leaving the Philippine Cup champions one win away from their second straight finals appearance.

Former UE coach Lawrence Chongson lets his hair down at PinoyExchange.com

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on April 20, 2011 at 15:36 | Comments (28)
I had wanted to blog about this earlier, but there were more, uh, pressing matters to blog about. Over the weekend, Lawrence Chongson, former coach of the University of the East Red Warriors in the UAAP and current coach of Cobra in the PBA D-League, joined the fray in the popular message board community Pinoy Exchange and began answering questions from its readers.

Answers that involved such topics as UE star Ken Acibar, and the coach’s long, flowing locks:

good morning guys. to answer ur questions for today: #1 yes. Acibar will stil play for d university, unless tanggalin din sya. #2 never pa ako nagapapa-rebond ng buhok in my entire life. if u wud only come closer to me then u'll see. noon pa man pati mga girls nai-inggit sa hair ko kasi straight daw. maybe its my chinese genes, i don't know. at my age hndi na ako masyadong conscious sa ganyan. kung alam mo lang how much hair i've lost or nalalagas sakin since i started coaching UE. syempre super-pressured diba? lalo na kung alam mong marami ang babatikos everytime matatalo ang team.

Krip Yuson is a plagiarist AND a jackass

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on April 18, 2011 at 19:23 | Comments (38)
I was ready to just let the whole Krip Yuson plagiarism issue die down; the man said his piece immediately after I’d brought the issue to fore, and writers from other corners of the Internet came up with thoughtful, well-written pieces on the matter.

But then the Palanca Hall of Famer wrote about the incident this morning in his Philippine Star column, which just about unmasked his earlier apology as disingenuous.

From the Stands: Air 21’s upset, Mark the Spark’s return, Olsen Racela vs. LA Tenorio

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on April 15, 2011 at 13:26 | Comments (11)
Polo Bustamante and Carlo Pamintuan are back this week alongside Chuck Araneta in time for the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals. But first, they recap Air 21’s upset of Alaska and the heroics of Mark “The Spark” Caguioa in Ginebra’s win over Rain Or Shine. For this week’s old school versus new school, the guys pit two of the greatest point guards in Ateneo Blue Eagles history: Olsen Racela vs. LA Tenorio.

PBA Rewind: Ginebra versus NCC, and the birth of never-say-die basketball

Posted by Jay P. Mercado on April 14, 2011 at 16:04 | Comments (29)
Editor’s note: Fire Quinito is proud to present the blogging debut of Jay P. Mercado, the amateur historian of Philippine basketball who has gained renown on various message boards around the Internet for his encyclopedic knowledge of Pinoy hoops. Inspired by the upcoming PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals series between crowd darling Ginebra and national squad Smart Gilas, Jay looked back at another matchup 26 years ago that pitted the most popular PBA ballclub against the national team.

The conquest of Ginebra, the PBA’s number one box-office attraction, over Rain Or Shine in the quarterfinals of the Commissioner’s Cup not only ensured a smile on Commissioner Chito Salud’s face, but it also brought me a sense of déjà vu over the upcoming best-of-five semifinals between the Gin Kings and the Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team.

Some 26 years ago, the same Ginebra franchise was also locked in the first game of the semifinals against the Northern Consolidated Corporation (NCC) guest team, the national squad whose success was used as a blueprint by Smart Gilas.
