As a boxing champion, Manny Pacquiao is great; as a congressman, not so much

Congressman Manny Pacquiao

Last night, the House of Representatives undertook the most important act of the 15th Congress so far: impeaching Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez for betrayal of public trust. However, the most popular member of the legislature was absent from the proceedings.

So what’s a Yeng Guiao game against Smart Gilas without a little controversy?

Rain or Shine Elastopainters

The last time a team coached by Yeng Guiao played Smart Gilas in a PBA tournament, back in the 2009-2010 Philippine Cup, Air 21 point guard Wynne Arboleda ended up assaulting a Gilas fan at courtside in a very ugly incident in a rough-and-tumble game. So when Guiao’s new team, Rain or Shine, faced off against the Gilas squad last Sunday, many fans were also expecting fireworks.

Football and the Junta: The Azkals kick off AFC Challenge Cup qualifier in Myanmar

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on March 21, 2011 at 16:25 | Comments (13)
Filipino fans that have caught the Azkals fever have been disappointed over the details of the coverage of the Philippine national team’s games in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifiers, which kick off today in Rangoon.

The military junta’s regime in Myanmar – still Burma to pro-democracy activists – is known to be among the most restrictive in the world when it comes to the free flow of information. Local publications are monitored by a strict censors board, and rarely run news items beyond those in line with official government policy. Journalists who run afoul of the authorities are harassed and even jailed.

Azkals strategy: The 4-2-3-1 formation

Editor’s note: This post was written by Ryan Fenix, a football addict who runs the blog The Prawn Sandwich Brigade.

News reports coming in from Myanmar, thanks to Craig Burrows of PinoyFootball.com, suggest that the Azkals will employ the 4-2-3-1 formation later tonight in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers against Myanmar. This is a more defensive variation of the 4-5-1 midfield formation.

Football Analysis: The Azkals take a step back against Mongolia in Ulan Bator

Posted by Ryan Fenix on March 17, 2011 at 17:47 | Comments (7)
Editor’s note: This post was written by Ryan Fenix, a football addict who runs the blog The Prawn Sandwich Brigade.

In the end, we lost the battle, but we won the war. But not before we had some unnecessarily tense moments out there.

Did the weather play a major factor in the Azkals loss to Mongolia in the second leg of its AFC Challenge Cup playoff in Ulan Bator? Absolutely.

Nonito Donaire signs with Golden Boy; Top Rank Promotions to sue over contract

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on March 17, 2011 at 16:09 | Comments (7)
Golden Boy Promotions today announced that it had signed Filipino bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire to its fold. The Filipino-American boxer had climbed up the pound-for-pound rankings with very impressive victories over Wladimir Sidorenko and Fernando Montiel, and his star has never been brighter.

But the move does not figure to go smoothly for Donaire. Bob Arum, head of Top Rank Promotions that previously handled the fighter’s career, claims that Donaire still has a live contract with the company, and will be filing a suit against Golden Boy.

San Miguel to change its name to Petron

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on March 16, 2011 at 17:25 | Comments (18)
Fidel Mangonon III broke news on Twitter that PBA commissioner Chito Salud has approved the motion of San Miguel to change the team’s name to Petron Blaze. The move comes after the reported proposal by another petroleum company, Phoenix, to join the PBA.

Petron’s entry doesn’t mean that the Phoenix bid to join the PBA is dead; any transaction for a franchise sale would require two-thirds approval of the league’s board of governors (7 out of 10). Currently, San Miguel Corporation owns three seats in the board.

Dorkapalooza Report: Rafe Bartholomew on advanced stats and its future in the PBA

Posted by Rafe Bartholomew on March 16, 2011 at 14:07 | Comments (9)
Editor's note: This post was written by Rafe Bartholomew, author of Pacific Rims: Beermen Ballin' in Flip-Flops and the Philippines' Unlikely Love Affair with Basketball.

One of my close friends studies at MIT's Sloan School of Business, and when he emailed me a few months ago to ask if I'd be interested in attending Sloan's Sports Analytics Conference, I jumped at the opportunity. Bill Simmons coined the name Dorkapalooza to describe the Sloan Conference, and I thought of the event as the time of year when the apostles of Moneyball in all major sports gathered to spread the gospel of quantitative analysis.

As my love for Willie Miller might suggest, I'm more of a basketball aesthete than a results-minded stats guy. I can forgive the missed free throws, two-for-thirteen games, and the fact that nearly every PBA fan accuses him of selling games as long as Willie converts one of his patented quick spins on the left wing to set up a bank shot.

What’s next for the Azkals

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on March 15, 2011 at 15:03 | Comments (8)
With its 3-2 aggregate victory over Mongolia, the Philippine national football team moves to the qualifying group stage of the AFC Challenge Cup which will be held from March 21 to 25 in Yangon, Myanmar. In the same group are teams that are curiously ranked lower than the Philippines (#151) in the latest FIFA World Ranking: Bangladesh (#174), Palestine (#178), and the hosts (#161). The Mongolian team which the Azkals just defeated was ranked #183.
