AFC Challenge Cup qualifying round recap: How the Azkals won big over Bangladesh
Editor’s note: Our regular football contributor Ryan Fenix, who runs the The Prawn Sandwich Brigade blog, is back with a review of the Azkals’ successful campaign to qualify for the AFC Challenge Cup. In part 1, he takes a look at the team’s long hard climb, and how it pulled off a 3-0 win over Bangladesh to make Pinoy football history.
The Azkals’ Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup journey that started one raucous February night at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City, Philippines culminated in euphoria at the Bogyoke Aung San Stadium in Rangoon, Burma on the afternoon of March 25, 211.
We are through to the AFC Challenge Cup in 2012, for the first time in Philippine football history.

Gerald Anderson to play in PBA D-League?

Snow Badua is reporting on Twitter that ABS-CBN actor Gerald Anderson just might be making an appearance soon in the PBA Developmental League. NLEX team coach Boyet Fernandez told Badua that the Catch Me, I’m in Love star has been practicing with the team for the last three days, although he hasn’t been included yet in the lineup. Fernandez is impressed with the former Tayong Dalawa leading man’s defense. “He can pressure the point guard of the opposing team,” Fernandez said, although it’s unclear if the opposing ball-handler is really pressured by Anderson’s defense or he’s just distracted by the actor’s dreamy eyes (which is, incidentally, the question we all ask about Chris Tiu’s tough defense).
On the Fil-Am divide
Editor’s note: Yesterday, Lem Satterfield of Boxing Scene published an interesting interview with Bob Arum where the Top Rank promoter talked about the difference between boxing champions Nonito Donaire and Manny Pacquiao, and the difference between Filipino-Americans and Filipinos. I emailed Powerade Tigers center Rob Reyes about his thoughts on the issue, and he wrote back with this thoughtful take on the divide between Filipinos from both sides of the Pacific Ocean.
Where do I start? The Fil-Am discussion is quite a big one, especially for me being a Fil-Am. The word itself bothers me sometimes, mostly because growing up in the States, Americans didn’t refer to me as “American” – I was always the Filipino kid. They called me Filipino once I made it clear that I wasn’t Hispanic, since there were many Hispanics in Florida. I guess some Filipinos feel strongly about the issue. There are a few things I think about when people get into this Fil-Am debate.

SMC, Air 21 block Barako sale to Phoenix
Patricia Hizon broke the news on Twitter that the three San Miguel Corporation teams in the PBA – San Miguel Beer, Ginebra, and B-MEG Derby Ace – have voted against allowing the sale of the Barako Bull franchise to Phoenix Petroleum. With Air 21 voting alongside the conglomerate, it effectively prevents the sale from happening, as league rules dictate that a franchise sale needs the approval of 2/3rds of the board, or 7 out of 10 votes. The board ended up voting in favor of the sale, 6-4, which was not enough to approve it.

Azkals versus Bengal Tigers: Philippines in must-win match against Bangladesh tonight
At least, the math is easy. If the Philippine national football team wins against Bangladesh tonight, it will advance to the final tournament of the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup, which is scheduled next year.
The Bengal Tigers are currently ahead of the Azkals in the standings, as a result of their shocking 2-0 win over Myanmar last Wednesday, a remarkable recovery after getting totally outclassed by Palestine on Monday.

The Barako prototype: A deep profile of coach and politician Joseller “Yeng” Guiao
Editor’s note: Karlitos Brian Decena, a 3rd year journalism student at UP Diliman, was required to write a profile story for his investigative journalism class. An avid basketball fan, he chose as his subject controversial PBA coach Yeng Guiao, who also serves as vice-governor in Pampanga. Decena traveled to the province and examined public documents for his research. He got a grade of 1.0 for this project.
Clad in a red polo shirt and black slacks, Pampanga Vice Governor and Red Bull Barako coach Joseller “Yeng” Guiao watched Dondon Hontiveros hit a triple, giving San Miguel the lead with four minutes left in the second quarter.
After the shot, the bald-headed Guiao, known for haranguing players on court, did something a coach ordinarily would not do.

Azkals versus Al-Fursan: A look at tonight’s match against the Palestinian football side

This afternoon, the Philippine national men’s football team will be going up against Palestine’s Al-Fursan (“The Knights”) in its second outing in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifiers in Rangoon, Myanmar. Although ranked a lowly #178 in the latest FIFA world rankings, Palestine is a dangerous opponent for the Azkals, as evidenced by its 2-0 victory over Bangladesh last Monday.
