Air 21--the whole team--for sale to SMC?
Rey Joble of GMA News today confirms that PBA commissioner Chito Salud has shot down the proposed trade for Air 21’s marquee rookies Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, and Rey Guevarra in exchange for San Miguel’s Joseph Yeo, Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi, a first round pick from the Beermen, a case of San Mig Light, and 3 years’ supply of Skelan for the senior citizens in the deal. Salud called the deal lopsided, and virtually confirmed reports that there has been a trade despite vehement denials of Air 21 officials.
Air 21 to send Baclao, Al-Hussaini, Guevarra to San Miguel, continues to ruin the PBA

GMA News is reporting that the Air 21 Express is on the verge of trading Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, and Rey Guevarra, the top three picks in the 2011 PBA draft, to San Miguel in exchange for the Beermen’s 2011 first round draft pick, Joseph Yeo, and the corpses of Danny Seigle and Mick Pennisi in yet another lopsided deal. Baclao led the PBA in shotblocks in the recently-concluded Philippine Cup, while Al-Hussaini led the Express in scoring and rebounding in the tournament.
Noli Eala out of the SBP, into San Miguel?

If plans don’t miscarry, Noli Eala will soon be out of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. The ouster of the executive director, according to multiple sources, stems from several issues of mismanagement under his reign, particularly of the Smart Gilas program. One issue involves the failure to liquidate funds supposedly for the team, which resulted in the delay of salaries of the Smart Gilas players.

Busting myths in the Azkals bandwagon
Editor’s note: Paolylo is a lifelong football fan and a frustrated player. In this guest post, he busts the common myths and misconceptions surrounding the Philippine national football program as the Azkals bandwagon has grown larger with the team’s recent success.
While channel surfing one December night and seeing the score “PHI 1 VIE 0” after 60 minutes on Star Sports, I honestly thought that was a broadcasting error. Having seen the replay days prior of the Azkals’ 1-1 draw against Singapore in the AFF Suzuki Cup – itself a monumental upset – I thought there was no way our team would pull off another result against Vietnam, a team that would normally dominate us.

Rafe Bartholomew to new Pinoy soccer fans: No need to take cheap shots at basketball
Editor's note: This post was written by Rafe Bartholomew, author of Pacific Rims: Beermen Ballin' in Flip-Flops and the Philippines' Unlikely Love Affair with Basketball.
Let me get something out of the way up front: I am a basketball fanatic. I've played and followed the game my entire life, and with the publication of Pacific Rims last year, the sport has also been at the heart of my biggest achievement. The other half of this equation, of course, is the Philippines, a country that I've come to love as if it were my own. A major part of my relationship with the Philippines is the nation's relationship with basketball, which I found a great deal of inspiration in while devoting five years of my life to studying and writing about Pinoy hoops. So right now, let it be known and acknowledged: I write this from an unapologetically pro-basketball point-of-view.
The Philippine national soccer team has captivated the sports community over the past few months. I don't need to re-cap the Azkals' success in the Suzuki cup or their recent win over Mongolia, since both have been beaten to death in blogs, Tweets and the traditional sports media. Yay!

A dinner with Talk N Text coach Chot Reyes
For the second straight year, I had the privilege of speaking with the coach of the Philippine Cup champions shortly after winning the title. Over dinner and beer last Tuesday night, Coach Chot Reyes joined me and bloggers from Patay Ang Butiki and From the Stands to shoot the breeze and talk hoops. Because we were all basketball nerds, we ended up talking about everything from the series against San Miguel to his MBA stint to what happened between him and Jun Limpot.
But most of our conversation focused on Talk N Text, Smart Gilas, and the Ateneo Blue Eagles. Here’s the stuff (I think) I can publish:

Azkals beat Mongolia's Blue Wolves, 2-0, in first leg of AFC Challenge Cup playoff
By now everyone knows about the Philippine national men’s football team’s big 2-0 win last night in the first leg of its home-and-away AFC Challenge Cup playoff versus Mongolia. The Azkals totally outclassed their opponents last night, completely controlling the match from start to finish.
The secret to PBA championship success
So what do Chot Reyes, Tim Cone, and Ryan Gregorio – the coaches of the last three PBA championship-winning teams – have in common that set them apart from other coaches?
They all read Fire Quinito.
Of course, the fact that they are all brilliant coaches who led talent-laden squads probably had more to do with their victories. But hey, if Quinito Henson can talk about birthdays and biorhythm during the PBA broadcast and pass it off as “analysis”, then I can claim to be the reason for these coaches’ success, right? Let’s take a look back at how they got here.

The Talk N Text Tropang Texters are the 2011 PBA Philippine Cup champions
If you’ve been reading this blog, then tonight’s result shouldn’t have come as any surprise to you: As expected, Talk N Text finished off the San Miguel Beermen in 6 games to win its second PBA Philippine Cup title in three years. Point guards Jimmy Alapag and Jason Castro shared Finals Most Valuable Player honors, while Ryan Reyes provided the team an emotional lift with an amazing performance that came on the heels of the tragic death of his younger brother.
