Ang Sugarol: Do-or-die Christmas pick

Posted by Ronald Po on December 25, 2010 at 13:54 | Comments (0)
Talk N Text, San Miguel, and Derby Ace are all in the semifinals, for good reason: for most of the Philippine Cup, they’ve been among the top four teams in the league.

The last semifinalist will be determined today with a knockout game at the Cuneta Astrodome between the Alaska Aces and the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings. As predicted, this has been the closest matchup of all quarterfinal pairings. Ginebra’s 18-point win was entirely unexpected; I thought the crowd darlings would take game 2, but I didn’t think it was going to be a blowout.

Free Darko does the Crispa Redmanizers

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on December 20, 2010 at 18:32 | Comment (1)
Crispa Redmanizers

Rafe Bartholomew is finally back to writing about basketball (maybe because Glee is on hiatus) with a post on Free Darko about the legendary Crispa Redmanizers. If you’ve been reading his blog, you might remember his story about finding an album full of Crispa pictures at a tiangge in Tiendesitas. For the new post, he consulted with the eminent message board historian of the PBA, Jay P. Mercado, to give context to the photos.

While we’re at it, you might want to check out Rey Joble’s piece on GMANews.TV a few weeks back about the Redmanizers’ 1980 All-Filipino conference run, when they almost ended the conference undefeated. They dropped one game, to rival Toyota, en route to winning the championship.

Ang Sugarol: Sunday quarterfinals picks

Posted by Ronald Po on December 19, 2010 at 09:46 | Comments (0)
(1) Talk and Text vs. (8) Rain or Shine

Previous Results:
95-93 Rain or Shine (11/20)
86-81 Talk N Text (12/4)

My pick: Rain or Shine (+6.5) over Talk N Text

Rain or Shine is a scrappy team and should have finished higher than 8th. While powerhouse Talk N Text will eventually prevail in this series (they only need to win once), I like Rain or Shine to steal one from the Tropang Texters. If Sol Mercado’s posse doesn’t win tonight, I expect a close game. A small bet on the Rain or Shine moneyline might end up scoring you a quick buck.

Ang Sugarol: Handicapping the start of the 2010 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals

Posted by Ronald Po on December 17, 2010 at 15:33 | Comments (2)
In previous installments of this column, we discussed the basics of sports betting, and your options on where to bet. Today we wade into the deeper end of the pool to talk about betting strategies in time for today’s start of the Philippine Cup quarterfinals. Not all match-ups are created equal, but make no mistake about it, wagering on the games isn’t any less fun.

Why we need to love football

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on December 16, 2010 at 19:31 | Comments (16)
Filipinos are naturally short, which is why we should forget our unrequited love for the tall man’s game of basketball, and instead focus our resources of football, where we can be more competitive internationally. It’s a common refrain that has grown louder with the recent success of the Philippine national football team in the ongoing Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup. Traditionally the doormats of the competition, the Azkals’ 2-0 victory over defending champion Vietnam has galvanized the Filipino sports fan base with dreams of more international football glory.

On its face, the argument for football over basketball seems sound. It’s easy to imagine the graceful Pinoy athlete gliding through the pitch to dominate the beautiful game. Watching tiny Pinoy hoopsters soaring above the rim over foreign 7-footers, however, is much harder to fathom.

The numbers, however, tell a different story.

Why does most sports broadcasting suck?

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on December 9, 2010 at 17:35 | Comments (13)
This AV Club article by Noel Murray about why sports announcing is generally terrible hits so many nails right in the head that I’ve decided to devote a whole post to it. Well, if you’re a sports nut who cares about this stuff, I highly suggest heading over there to read the whole piece, as well as most of the comments, which have some real gems as well.

But here are a couple of points that I wanted to discuss from the article:

Hehe, who would have ever thought “Kris Aquino” and “Lou Gatumbato” would appear in the same headline? Only on Fire Quinito! Also, a reminder for everyone that the Philippines vs. Burma game tonight will be broadcast on ESPN at 8:30 PM.

Anyway, here are some interesting reads to get you through humpday:

Philippines versus Burma

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on December 7, 2010 at 20:00 | Comments (2)
I traveled to Thailand a couple of times this year along with my colleagues from the day job to conduct training seminars for expatriate Burmese journalists working for Mizzima News. It was an eye-opening experience, to say the least, and even though the training schedule was packed, there was time to shoot the breeze a little with the Burmese journos. In fact, I was even able to ask them about how they felt about the last Rambo film, which was set in Burma and filmed in Thailand. Apparently, the pirated DVD of the movie was a huge hit among the Burmese, and the guys I talked to were even proud to share that they knew fellow Burmese exiles who scored gigs as extras in the Stallone film.

Editor’s note: Ang Sugarol is Fire Quinito’s series on sports gambling. After taking us through betting 101 in the first installment, former UP professor and sports betting professional Ronald Po discusses the options available to the betting newbie.

In the previous post, I discussed some concepts and ideas about sports betting. Armed with knowledge about the sport/league that you want to bet on, you are now ready to dabble into the fun world of sports betting. You have a few choices on where to bet, each with its own pros and cons:
