Filipino boxer Z Gorres undergoes emergency brain surgery, in critical condition after win in Las Vegas
Some very sad news broke out of Las Vegas on the eve of the much-anticipated Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight. Filipino fighter Z Gorres collapsed after his 10-round decision victory over Colombian Luis Melendez and was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital, where Boxing Scene reports that he was diagnosed with subdural hematoma. Gorres had to be placed in a medically-induced coma as doctors had to remove part of his skull to relieve the swelling of his brain.
It was an unfortunate turn of events for Gorres, whose win over Melendez would have assured him of a spot in a new Pinoy Power card headlined by Nonito Donaire next year. Instead, he is now battling for his life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Z and his family.

Boxing mop-up: Manny Pacquiao versus Miguel Cotto
Fire Quinito rounds up all the essential reading for the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto superfight, so you can save your energy to argue whether Amanda really deserved to be sole survivor.
Tim Starks, The Queensberry Rules: “I couldn’t dream it any better, I really couldn’t. For the first time since I can remember, a mega-fight is a mega-fight on the merits, and I don’t have to make any excuses, things like ‘Dear non-boxing fans, please know that if you watch this fight and it sucks it’s not representative of the sport as a whole.’ No, Nov. 14’s 145-pound bout between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto is the best of both worlds. Purists love it, but at the same time, the New York Times is giving boxing some rare coverage and even the U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, is making predictions about the winner.”

Manny Pacquiao build-up, elsewhere
I have a couple of new Pacquiao-related postings posted elsewhere on the Internets. First, I’m debuting a new column called “Punch-Drunk” at the new Yahoo! Pacquiao website, and in my first outing, I talk about how Pacquiao has turned into an awesome action movie hero since his big win over Marco Antonio Barrera all those years ago. Yippee ki-yay, motherfucker!
Meanwhile, on the FHM Man's Blog, I wrote a post about the experience of watching Pacquiao fights in the theater along with my closest buddies. It has become sort of a bonding experience, something that we look forward to almost as much as the fight itself. We usually watch at Gateway. Where are you guys watching the Pacquiao fight?
UPDATE: The site can now be accessed via http://www.ringsidewithmanny.com/. My second column was posted today, about how Manny Pacquiao spent his summer.

Pacquiao-Cotto 24/7: Ari Gold hugs it out with Manny’s very own Entourage in episode 3
Editor’s note: Manny Pacquiao’s mega-fight versus Miguel Cotto inches near, and after a tumultuous camp inBaguio and a welcome return to Hollywood, Ari Gold shows up at the Wildcard Gym to hug it out with the the pound-for-pound champ. Fire Quinito’s special guest critic, Alekos Orendain, takes us through this week’s Pacquiao-Cotto 24/7.
Whenever I see Jeremy Piven, anywhere, I automatically think Ari Gold. So when he makes a brief appearance at the beginning of the 3rd episode, I was half-expecting him to talk Pacquiao into leaving Top Rank and signing with Miller-Gold instead. His appearance made a strange kind of sense in this episode, with it focusing a bit more on Pacquiao’s showbiz pursuits rather than his training. We get a behind the scenes look at Wapakman (not that I was particularly interested in it) and many (much too many) a glimpse of that ridiculous costume he wears. Ah that costume, what the hell is up with that? You’d think with all the money he’s making they could at least create a better outfit, but no, they had to settle on something that actually looked worse than Adam West’s Batman costume. Anyway, also featured in this episode was Pacquiao’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel’s show, where interestingly enough, Ari Gold’s favorite client Vinny Chase himself was a guest in the first season of Entourage (thanks to Jaemark for pointing that out).

The Philippine National Team we all could get behind
The Nokia Pilipinas Under-16 National Team, coached by Eric Altamirano and led by Ateneo Blue Eaglets star Kiefer Ravena, was all over the sports headlines today after winning a pocket tournament in Cebu that featured Chinese Taipei, Japan, and Iran. The team had a very impressive 77-57 victory in the finals over Iran, whose senior men’s team is the two-time defending Asian champions.
I don’t know exactly the caliber of the other teams who participated in the tournament, if these really were their countries’ national youth teams, although two of Iran’s top scorers, Soheil Yousefi and Mohammad Ojaghi, also represented the country in last July’s Asian Youth Games 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Still, this was a very impressive performance for Nokia Pilipinas.

Conrad on Manny Pacquiao
It’s always a treat when Inquirer columnist Conrado de Quiros, perhaps my all-time favorite Filipino writer, delves into sports. He doesn’t do it often, seeing as, with the state of our country, he really needs to be writing about other things, but when he does it, the results are almost always excellent, like the two articles he wrote about pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao over the last couple of weeks.
The first one was about Pacquiao’s otherworldly confidence, as he notes that the Pac-man was just “as fearless facing his interviewer as he was facing Ricky Hatton.” He then wonders if Pacquiao’s extraordinary success is something borne of his extraordinary confidence, something that is frowned upon in our country’s culture:

Pacquiao 24/7: Manny takes a beating in episode 2, but at least he gets a nice soundtrack
Editor’s note: Manny Pacquiao’s buildup for his mega-fight with Miguel Cotto continues. After turmoil in Pac-Man’s camp in the first episode of Pacquiao-Cotto 24/7, thing began to settle down for the pound-for-pound champ. Fire Quinito’s special guest critic, Alekos Orendain, takes us through the week in Pacquiao’s preparation.
I have to say, it’s been an interesting week for the National Fist. Most of us have probably seen clips of Manny singing Sometimes When We Touch on the Jimmy Kimmel Show (seriously, it’s not that he’s going up against a full fledged elite welterweight that has me convinced that he’s got the biggest balls in boxing, it’s that he has the guts to take his videoke trained singing voice and showcase it in a primetime talk show so very emphatically) and have probably read the amazing article in Time magazine (where he also makes the cover) about him and his life.

Rallying cry
In an interview with the LAist to promote his latest book, a 700-page tome about basketball, Bill Simmons shares some words of wisdom about writing in the digital age:
Back from the dead
How’s everyone doing? Sorry about the lack of updates. Last week, my laptop’s monitor conked out on me just before the long weekend. I was still able to do a little work by hooking up the laptop to my TV, but I couldn’t get any extended writing. I got the laptop fixed earlier this week, but then other stuff got in the way, so yeah, no updates.
Anyway, here’s some stuff I’d been meaning to pass along the past few days:
