Smart Gilas success allows Noli Eala to blow hot air once more

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on May 22, 2009 at 19:11 | Comments (8)
Smart Gilas, the developmental basketball team gearing up for the 2011 FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifier, finished a very respectable 5th in the recently concluded FIBA-Asia Champions Cup. It was great to see the team on the right track, and it really does seem that the kids are alright.

Special Agent Manny Pacquiao

The best boxer in the planet, Manny Pacquiao, is taking his new designation as a Philippine special intelligence agent very seriously. Today he called on the New People's Army, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, to lay down their guns and end the longest insurgency in Southeast Asia.

Smart Gilas RP National Basketball Team

Just noticed that I'm getting a lot of traffic from people searching about the Smart Gilas RP National Basketball Team currently competing in the FIBA-Asia Champion's Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia. Let me point you guys to the wall-to-wall coverage of the competition over at Bleachers' Brew. Rick Olivares is doing a great job, if you don't mind him nuthugging national team coach Rajko Toroman every few paragraphs or so.

Philippine government, Muslim rebels to settle their differences... in the boxing ring?

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on May 17, 2009 at 04:55 | Comments (0)
So maybe giving Manny Pacquiao a position as a government spy wasn't such a bad idea. Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Harry Angping on Friday announced plans for the government, including the Philippine Army (where Pacquiao is a reservist) and the Philippine National Police, to engage the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front in a boxing tournament.

No wonder their basketball team sucked: Australia's National Basketball League on the verge of folding up

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on May 14, 2009 at 00:51 | Comments (4)
Andrew GazeLast April, the PBA-backed national basketball team, Powerade Team Pilipinas, played a pair of tune-up games against a selection from Australia. The series came on the heels of the cancellation of a previously scheduled tuneup match against a professional team in Puerto Rico. The PBA scrambled to find a replacement so that the team could see some much needed court time, and ended up flying over a ragtag bunch of Australian ballers for the exhibition games.

Nonito Donaire and Brian Viloria with their opponents

Boxing champions Nonito Donaire and Brian Viloria, fresh off their twin victories in April's "The Flash and the Furious" card at the Araneta Coliseum, are looking to bring their brand of Filipino awesome to San Francisco fight fans. The Manila Bulletin is reporting that Top Rank's Bob Arum is reportedly looking at an August 22 date in the Bay Area, to draw the same fans who showed Manny Pacquiao mad love during the San Francisco Giants' Filipino heritage night last month.

Fire Quinito gets some love over at the Basketball Exchange. He left in the fart jokes. Thanks Gary!

Also, it was his idea to do an interview. All I wanted was a link. I didn't force him to do that or anything.

Btw, I get asked a lot about the site's name, but never about the subtitle. Someday, someone will, and my answer will start with, "You know how it burns when you pee when you have..."

Manny Pacquiao with Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo

In report after report in fight after fight about Manny Pacquiao's preparation, we always hear about the intense training and strict regimen for the pound-for-pound champ. When the report gets to Pacquiao's diet there's always something about how he eats the Filipino dish tinolang manok day after hard training day.
