Wynne-gate

I’d like to point everyone to this thoughtful analysis from Rafe Bartholomew of the Wynne Arboleda incident. I would call it a must-read, but if you’ve been reading this blog long enough, you’d know that pretty much everything Rafe writes is a must-read. While he doesn’t absolve and condone Wynne’s behavior, he does empathize with the Burger King guard and points out flaws in our culture along the way. I grew up watching basketball in the environment that Rafe describes; I’d written about how my mom took me to my first PBA game when I was six, featuring my favorite Purefoods Hotdogs against the evil Ginebra team led by Robert Jaworski, and a riot damn near broke out.

Rafe’s post provides context and balance to the sentiment in a lot of different places, including my buddies over at Patay ang Butiki, calling for Wynne’s head. Of course, I do agree that there needs to be punishment, as Alaska coach Tim Cone put it, “A message must be sent.” I’d argued before (in Danny I’s case) that players really ought to be smarter about these things, given that they probably have more to lose. Maybe the repercussions of this incident will be enough to drill that into everyone’s heads.

While we’re here, let me call out this latest column by Mico Halili where he basically argues that the fan started throwing invectives at Arboleda because he got so worked up by the awesomeness of Smart Gilas. I’m a huge Mico Halili fan—I think he’s the best play-by-play guy in the country—but what the fuck? Who ghost-wrote that column, Noli Eala? Fanboy much?

I also don’t get the whining about the rough play from Burger King throughout the game. Of course, a lot of it was uncalled for—that’s why the referees called all the flagrant fouls on the Burger King players, and that’s why Arboleda was ejected! Justice was served, and play continued. As the old Robert Jaworski saying goes, “Kung ayaw n’yong masaktan sa basketball, mag-chess na lang kayo.”

But the rough play or the refs’ calls wasn’t the reason Ronjay Buenafe and Gary David could get any shot that they wanted, or that Beau Belga could barrel his way to the hoop unimpeded, or that Richard fucking Yee could get layup after fucking layup by making the same baseline cut that every forward in every pickup game in every street and plaza basketball court all over the Philippines does.

So let me go back to that Purefoods-Ginebra game from when I was six. Purefoods fans were obviously outnumbered, and the Ginebra rogue’s gallery—Jaworski, Gonzalgo, Isaac, and company—were doing their best to intimidate the pretty-boy Hotdogs, led by their star rookie slasher, Jojo Lastimosa. I’m sure Jolas had his share of hacks, kicks, and other public displays of affection from the Gins on his way to the hoop.

Jolas and the rest of the Hotdogs didn’t whine about the rough calls, or even the unruly crowd who showered peso coins on the court. You know what they did to get back at Ginebra?

Win.

nice piece by rafe. a beautiful way of framing things.

i think we all agree there are plenty of issues involved in the matter. but while i do believe that fan responsibility, as well as the poor handling of both the PBA and the Araneta Coliseum management of an incident that could have been easily prevented from escalating, are important to discuss, my concern is the fact that wynne arboleda might go unpunished (or under-punished) for an act that is just plain wrong.

sometimes, the problem with spreading the blame is if you spread it too thin, you end up punishing no one at all.
#1.1 jaemark on 2009-10-18 03:13 (Reply)
that's true. but in our culture, nuance is usually a problem and too often things are looked at in black and white.
#2 trix on 2009-10-18 11:41 (Reply)
yeah, i'll have to agree with you. rough play or not, they have to play hard and not let a Beau Belga look like Kobe with his shot fakes.
#3 ck on 2009-10-18 12:28 (Reply)
Why the heck did Mark Yee come into the picture when he should be on the bench? I think he should be suspended as well. The Mico Halili article didn't make sense. It was supposed to be something about players attacking fans which turned out to be a love letter for Gilas.

thinking the exact same thing about mark yee

dude, hater much?! i've only started reading your blog and it only took me a couple of smart-gilas related entries to tell that as much as you're trying not to be as biased as the real quinito, underneath it all you're just the same.

how bout the fact that prior to the wynne incident smart-gilas was up by 13 points?! Sure i give credit to the BK players for having a great night especially during the second half but doesn't all the flagrant fouls in the first 2 quarters count for anything?! mwntally and physically?

Gilas could have played better, a win is a win and there's no excuse in losing. But come on man, the gilas team already know they lost, there's no need for the hating. I don't ever recall any of them using the wynne incident as an excuse for the loss.

I know you're probably thinking the smart-gilas team hasn't really done much yet to be "worthy" of your fair, honest to goodness unbiased reviews, just like all the trads out there. but since it seems more and more basketball fans check out your page maybe you owe it to us to give a fair "un-quinito" like review.

muchos gracias amigo!

hey fanboy, i've never made any pretensions about being unbiased. i don't know where you would get the idea. i'm pretty fucking biased.

that said, i'm sorry that the stuff i've been writing here about smart gilas isn't glowing enough for you. dig in a little deeper and check out the stuff i wrote about the game between smart gilas and powerade, and how much i admired rajko toroman's coaching and how he assigned roles to his players. also noted how i expect gilas to struggle more against pba teams.
#4.2 jaemark on 2009-10-19 00:11 (Reply)
uhm, sorry... fangirl pala :)
#5 magic on 2009-10-18 22:45 (Reply)
btw, in mico halili's defense the title didn't say "just about the wynne incident and definitely not about smart-gilas" --- if it were so then all you guys should be disappointed and criticize him all you want.

the article talked about the incident, talked about burger king as one of the teams involved and smart-gilas as the other team involved. in short, they were all related. It's wasn't like he was talking about basketball then jumping to rocket science. just saying.
#6 magic on 2009-10-19 00:17 (Reply)
oh yeah i've read that. very good job, great job on the 2 out of uh 28 articles you've written that involves smart-gilas. your readers should give some sort of award for that.

funny how your latest entry talks about Noli Eala being too cavalier on twitter. You think you got all the right in the world to say what you wanna say and be "fucking" biased all you want?! then let other do the same brother.

and oh, appology accepted.

#6.1 jaemark on 2009-10-19 00:25 (Reply)
that's true, and i pointed out that noli's sentiments are valid, and OF COURSE he has every right to express himself. just like i have every right to talk about it, and you have every right to give me crap on my blog about the stuff i've been writing ;)

unlike noli though, i'm not the head of a national sports federation.

i totally get where you're coming from, and i appreciate the sentiment. i also believe there's a place in the conversation to be skeptical about the smart gilas program and the development. there's a place in the conversation for criticism. neither of which precludes anyone who cares the right to root for the team when they actually go out and compete for the country.
#7 magic on 2009-10-19 00:47 (Reply)
good point. i guess you're right. being the head of a national sports federation is a totally different league than working at PCIJ. guess Eala should have a higher sense of "journalistic responsibility" coz he's more popular.

anyway, smart-gilas is a developmental team of the philippines so it's as good as saying that there are a LOT of things to work on in their game and a lot of points that can be criticized, to them as a team or as individual palyers. i know it, i'm pretty sure the smart-gilas team knows it, and you've made it damn clear you know it. we can all agree on that.

but like what i said before, i just don't get the bad blood. as a developmental team of the philippines that actually means they're not the professional team of the philippines. No point in having too much angst coming from haters, riding on smart-gilas.
#7.1 jaemark on 2009-10-19 01:06 (Reply)
ahh, see... i never brought up journalistic responsibility. in his capacity, even when he tweets, Noli speaks for the institution, which is the SBP, because he is the Executive Director. i don't speak for the PCIJ whenever i blog. when Noli criticizes the PBA, he criticizes an organization that's an SBP stakeholder, in his capacity. when i criticize the Smart Gilas program, or Ryan Gregorio (coach of my favorite team, btw) i'm just a schmuck with a blog, i'm not speaking for the PCIJ.

this is an opinion blog, and as most people could surmise from the title, i have pretty strong opinions. with the way this thread is going, i'm sure you do too :)

like i said, i get where you're coming from, but i don't see why i shouldn't continue writing about Gilas (or Pinoy sports in general) the way i've always had, positive or negative. i do think there's enough nuance in my posts either way, but i dunno if you'd agree. your opinion is always welcome.
#8 magic on 2009-10-19 01:27 (Reply)
i guess you shouldn't have to change the way you write. you could be "fucking" biased all you want in your own blog. but like what i said, i just don't see the point and that i don't share the same bitterness or angst ridden opinions that you have towards the smart-gilas team.

anyway, cheers brother! :)
#8.1 jaemark on 2009-10-19 01:41 (Reply)
yeah i'll keep being a fucking biased hater. cheers! :)
#9 benj on 2009-10-19 03:15 (Reply)
I'm a bit embarrassed and a bit sorry to be not part of this big PBA hoopla. I stopped following the PBA when 1) Shell disbanded (my dad work for shell and we always had free tickets to the games) and 2) BTV made the NBA really accessible on a daily basis.

I am lost re: all the context, but I've been closely watching the PBA enough to know that Arboleda is the most annoying player since Rudy Distrito. I sincerely hope that he dies in a fire. :)
#10 eh on 2009-10-19 08:10 (Reply)
i also don't understand why some people are complaining about the rough plays, this is very normal in philippine basketball. we don't see it as often as we used to like in the 70's or 80's but it happens, and it could happen in any league in the philippines. it's just that the bk players took the initiative to play rough. IF the gilas player were the ones who were playing rough would they have been vilified? would the basketball fans react too? probably not. I actually think praises would have been said if the gilas players did play rough.

i'm not a hater of gilas i support the team but i do find it that there is overprotection for the gilas players by its over zealous fans.

lastly, are there really haters of gilas? from the different local basketball forums that i frequently visit there are more haters for the pba. i get the impression that the smart gilas team is being used as a vehicle to promote more hatred towards the pba.
#10.1 grayside on 2009-10-19 13:45 (Reply)
I think there's nothing wrong on being rough on the court. I have to give "props" to Yeng executing his master plan of intimidating Gilas. But when will you draw the line on being rough and being dirty? The F1 on Gary David is indeed my definition of a "rough foul". But the Matias of elbow on Tiu? (I hate Tiu, but common!) and the ploy of Arboleda to Bacarael was just down right filthy
#10.2 magic on 2009-10-19 19:04 (Reply)
hahaha :)) that's so funny! but damn losing 2.7 million (because wynne is now officially suspended for the rest of the conference without pay) must hurt.
#10.3 j_myxx | PatayAngButiki on 2009-10-19 21:25 (Reply)
i think its the fact that bk looked like they had it in for gilas last friday. did they play the same way against purefoods? would they play the same against any other pba team? that, i think, is the reason why some feel protective towards the gilas boys. every game they play, pba teams will be looking to rough em up, but when the pba teams play each other, its back to the old way. its not so much complaining about rough play as it is about the attitude of some players/teams against gilas.
