Sports & Recreation - Top Blogs Philippines

So dude, what's up with the name?

Dude, what's up with the name?

The blog was inspired by two of my favorite blogs, Fire Joe Morgan and FreeDarko. "Quinito" would be Quinito Henson, a Filipino sports journalist and TV analyst.

Wait, what kind of middle-aged man still goes by the name Quinito?

You would think he'd be a comedian (like Chiquito), but no. Reminds me of a joke, do you know who the oldest baby in the world is?

Baby Herman?

Nope.

Who?

Baby Dalupan.

Heh. Wait a minute, so you want to get Quinito fired?

Well, not really. Quinito's actually a pretty good writer, plus he has a lot of contacts through years in the business, so every now and again he comes up with something really interesting. Most of the time though, he just mails it in with stuff like this:

Sports psychologist Dr. Francis Santamaria said yesterday Manny Pacquiao’s spirituality and sense of purpose are his biggest abstract weapons that will lift him to victory over Ricky Hatton in their IBO lightwelterweight title fight in Las Vegas on May 2.

“The mind of an athlete must be like a Christian missionary’s,” said Santamaria who has worked with PBA players and national athletes in boxing, taekwondo, tennis, bowling and swimming. “He must focus on his works, his long-term mission and listen to his flock’s advice. He also knows that the right time and space will be coming and he should not hurry.”

Santamaria advised Pacquiao to stick to the basics of “here and now” and avoid distractions that could blunt his competitive edge.

“His being spiritual and sense of purpose, how his performance impacts on the country, his hometown and peace and order, are a great self-fulfillment,” continued Santamaria who has served more than 200 companies in the course of his career as a management consultant.

Ok, so he eats up all this B.S. from the psychologist. No harm done, right? Well, it's awesome how he never points out that the same guy managed a team of Philippine amateur boxers who got their asses handed to them in an Olympic qualifying tournament last year. I suppose they did not think about being a Christian missionary strongly enough?

But it's really his TV work that gets my beef. Seriously, about ten years ago, I watched a boxing match on TV where he was amazed about a fighter's bobbing and weaving, so he commented, “Wow, baka pinapanood ni [name of boxer] si Vergel Meneses, ang galing niyang mag-head-and-shoulder fake, eh!” (“Wow, he must watch [Former Philippine Basketball Association MVP] Vergel Meneses a lot, he's really good with his head-and-shoulder fakes!”)

Right.

It's silly how, when you listen to him on television, you can figure out how little he actually knows about the sports he covers, considering that he's been a sports analyst for about twenty-five years now. For example, when he was on the panel for a recent tuneup game by the Team Pilipinas basketball, he kept on harping that the reason James Yap was chosen for the team was because he could play both the shooting guard and the point guard positions.

Except that anyone who has ever watched James Yap for any regular period of time would know that JAMES YAP HAS NEVER PLAYED POINT GUARD! Not for Purefoods in the PBA, not for Welcoat or ICTSI in the PBL, not for the UE Red Warriors in the UAAP, and not even from his high school days in Iloilo. And if you know his game, you'd figure out why: he's an all-world scorer (the best in the PBA today), but he's a mediocre ballhandler, passer, and playmaker--only the things that any coach would look for in a point guard. It's odd that Quinito doesn't even know his game. Yap is not only one of the best players in the game, but he's also the most popular (with fans) and the most despised (with critics)--which makes him pretty much the most relevant PBA player of his generation. Quinito would have just been as wrong if he had claimed that national team coach Yeng Guiao picked Yap so he could introduce the coach to Kris Aquino's showbiz friends, Ruffa Gutierrez in particular.

Anyway.

It seems like Quinito's not really into the sports that he covers. You'd see it with the crap he occasionally pulls when he covers a game. On days when he'll be covering a game, he'd put out a column or a piece about whatever game he'd be covering that evening. And then during the game itself, he'd keep harping on the points and the angles that he raised in his column, thoroughly ignoring everything else in the game that he didn't cover in the column. It works well enough when he's right, but more often than not, he's wrong.

So Quinito's, like, the worst sports journalist ever, right?

No, not by a mile. But then it wouldn't be as funny if this blog had been name "Fire Musong Castillo".

Who's Musong Castillo?

Let's take that up some other time.

So if you don't want to get Quinito fired, what's the point of this blog?

I wanted to come up with something that's pretty much the opposite of all the things I mentioned above. Hopefully I could come up with a smart, funny, entertaining and irreverent blog that's passionate about Philippine sports.

Quinito Henson, Al Mendoza, Racah Trinidad all suck dick. Come to think of it, wala naman magaling na sportswriters dito. Bulok.
#2 Uly on 2009-05-06 18:41 (Reply)
really cool articles. i'll put this on my reader.

totally agree with your comments on Quinito. I always just mute the TV when he's on.
#2.1 jaemark on 2009-05-06 22:36 (Reply)
haha thanks uly. that means a lot coming from you. wag mo lang akong hihingan ng incident report pagkatapos.

Dude, Henson really irritates me. He's called the Dean. Im thinking, dean of what? The college of miscues?

He doesn't know his stuff. He comes off as a know-it-all but in fact, he just uses "insider" facts that only people with connections can get. His analyses of several sports are mostly wrong and he still passes himself as some expert. as if he were God's gift to Philippine sports. Particularly basketball, billiards, and boxing. He thinks he's at par with the people who really know their sport. Damn.

OTOH, Chino Trinidad is excusable. I mean, I don't really expect anything good from him. But this Henson guy really irks me.

Thanks for the cool site. A lot better than what's out on TV.

or perhaps people just have better things to do than commenting anonymously on blogs :)

When I saw this site's title, the first thing that came to my mind is, "wow, is this a petition not to allow quinito to cover NBA games anymore, how about chino?" hehe..
#5.1 the dean of don on 2009-10-22 19:02 (Reply)
#6 Jayvee on 2009-06-17 00:49 (Reply)
Awesome. You write great content! You should also make firechino.com and fireandyjao.com
#7 Rj on 2009-06-27 23:36 (Reply)
Finally a kindred spirit. Please do not forget his time covering the NBA finals. All he had were tidbits like Karl Malone is married to a Filipina and that he loves his mother-in-law's cooking and all that crap.
#8 perfectlyhuge on 2009-07-09 16:44 (Reply)
I think Quinito is a decent sportscaster. You seem to think so yourself. I agree the blogname catches attention, but it is counterintuitive. Sisikat lalo si Quinito niyan. Better stay off Chino, let him be forgotten in mediocrity.
#8.1 jaemark on 2009-07-09 21:38 (Reply)
he's a decent sportswriter, but he's a VERY shitty sportscaster. and i doubt that this blog would increase his profile, he's probably already the most well-known sportswriter in the land.
#9 Rj on 2009-07-12 06:15 (Reply)
Was Die Quinito taken?
#10 Renzbks on 2009-07-21 17:55 (Reply)
I totally agree with the title! I hate listening to him. He's such a biased commentator.
#11 heechulisnotgay on 2009-08-02 21:35 (Reply)
His voice, tone and wordy explanations make my ear bleed. thank goodness I don't watch much boxing. His basketball commentaries are already too much for me to bear. The Dean's List? Srsly?

PS
I don't know who Joe Morgan is, but the blogname reminded me of FireGeorgeKarl. But I do know who the FreeDarko guys are.
#12 Pip on 2009-08-22 03:17 (Reply)
I agree that Quinito has his flaws as a sportscaster and writer but dude, if you want to write about sports and be recognized for it, make your own name. Don't ride on someone's established albeit not-so-perfect name. My point being, yes we need an alternative sports writers but they should be known for their own merits and not just because they used a catchy name like "fire quinito". I don't see the point.
#12.1 jaemark on 2009-08-22 04:04 (Reply)
fair enough, but the name ultimately wouldn't matter if this were a shitty blog. the name starts a conversation -- you took time to comment on it in the middle of the night -- and this conversation, as most good conversations do, end up segueing into much more interesting and worth topics.
#13 dark knight on 2009-08-30 13:24 (Reply)
I guess "shut up noli eala" would be too long but I remember noli covering purefoods games before and screaming in amazement "kinaliwa pa ni rey evangelista" after the left handed player made an easy left handed lay up underneath the basket!

every decent player could make a off handed layup under the basket and this was a pro who was finishing with his STRONG hand... apparently, noli didnt know this after years of covering the games
#13.1 jaemark on 2009-08-30 13:47 (Reply)
yeah, i've written about noli eala extensively around this site.

walang kwentang commentator yang si quinito henson! napaka BIAS!!! amp!!! naalala ko pa way back sa PBA Alaska vs Ginebra pag naglalaban!!! Example: Pag naka shoot ang Ginebra ng basket tapos crucial sisigaw yan kasama si Ed Picson "Whata SHAT!!!!" tapos pag sa other end naka shoot ang Alaska... sabihn nila "Player scores" (tipong parang binulong lang) anyways siguro may nakakaintindi sa akin....or nakapansin nito.... para pang bakala yuang si quinito mukhang walang alam sa pinagsasabi!!! lahat nalang ng sports sya analyst boxing, bball, fencing, swimming, bowling, billiards, ping pong, archery, track and field and so.... hahaha!!! im glad may nakapansin sa katarantaduhan na pinaggagagawa ni quinito "THE DEAN" (Yah Right of what!?) henson!!! Cheers to you dude!!!

may i respectfully nominate sev sarmenta too?
my family tunes in to AM radio for audio when he's on. he's capable of saying things like 'mahirap talaga mag dribble kasi parang yoyo ang bola tataas bababa' or even more ridiculous (dangerous for kids learning the sport?) 'expert' basketball insights. thank you, sir.
#18 hendrix1 on 2009-09-06 14:02 (Reply)
Halos lahat ng commentators ng PBA lalo na ung mga old school like this one and Dr. J parang 70% trivia at 30% lang ang basketball analysis so you should fire them too. I can recall when its the Nba finals, kahit mas malinaw ang simulcast ng channel 9, we still switch to Espn or Star Sports, coz ang corny talaga nila mag comment at talagang mas may technical sense yung sa Espn or Star Sports. Dont forget to fire Chino Trinidad, puro sarcasm nalang naririnig ko dun.
#18.1 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-12 03:44 (Reply)
I have seen the PBA game between Ginebra vs TNT after I haven't seen one in almost a decade. I agree that PBA commentators just keep on yelling and shouting as the basketball action goes. These commentators are just like fans who are presented with microphones. They don't really provide any insight and analysis to the game. The viewers deserve better especially if one wants to increase his knowledge of the PBA and the game of basketball.
#19 boyet dones on 2009-09-14 07:45 (Reply)
hi jaemark. it's nice to have good bloggers like you which covers philippine sports in general. but what we do not agree is your blog title. why make fun of someone who is an institution in sports journalism? we guess it's very unchristian and licentious to be personal and that is not good for the soul to be negative to someone who had not done you any harm.it's ok to criticize but no to the point that it has become destructively.

as the old saying goes: "DON NOT DO UNTO OTHERS WHAT YOU DO NOT WANT OTHERS DO UNTO YOU".

may GOD bless you always.

I think FireBetchCelis.com would've been a good title. Yes, the typo was intended. Then again, she doesn't even claim to know anything, so that's one point for her.

best commentator and analyst of basketball are coaches that really coach, and spends time to acquire new knowledge locally and internationally.out of their own pockets.... di yon decoration lang.... ahh, like jawo?
#29 Bugoydegoy on 2009-12-15 16:30 (Reply)
many funny moments with quinito...during the jazz bulls series of 98 he referred to toni kukoc as toni kukik...tapos during the nets spurs series he referred to jason kidd as jason webb. well, i love quinito pero mas magaling mag analyze si andy jao. coach ata yan ng shell and manila beer (beer hausen) nung 80s. sa anchor naman, ayaw na ayaw ko talaga si sev sarmienta. pag sila ni quinito ang partners, minu mute ko ang tv.
#30 dai on 2009-12-21 19:32 (Reply)
yeah, i do too think of quinito henson as a shit.. he thinks too highly of himself, then there's the stuffs that he mentions whenever he is one of the commentators. he is a fag who always has to have a comment or a word about the players who are playing.
#31 Juan Tamad on 2010-01-20 18:12 (Reply)
Wow! I always enjoyed listening to Quinitos comments even if there is intentionally or unintentionally comedy. I never thought it got to the point that some folks like the author would go all out and even name this website "fire quinito" which I found really hilarious. I was searching the "web" for smart gilas schedule when i stumbled upon this site.
I guess we all need to have an outlet to vent our anger or frustration. The interesting thing that happened here is that in doing so made for a good and interesting read.

#34 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-12 03:48 (Reply)
Fans expect better game commentators and analyst. There are things better to do than YELLING and SHOUTING during a basketball game. These commentators should provide game analysis and insight for one things. Doing this more often will help the viewers appreciate a PBA game.
#35 pocholo on 2010-02-12 07:07 (Reply)
i think mr. henson is not that bad at all but he's not the best either. information-wise, he got loads. andy jao is better than the rest. it's only my opinion though. it's easy to be an arm-chair expert but those guys (basketball analysts) work their butts out. pero kung sinong bias i could name two- mr. henson and mr. c. trinidad. it would be wise siguro kung mag lo-launch ng book about philippine basketball na ang mga entry mga sinasabi at mga opinyon ng sambayanang pilipino- no holds barred kung baga.

basta can't wait for the launching of Pacific rims! sabi sa internet mid this year pa launching (kahit sa amazon, towers atbp)
#36 Fake on 2010-02-12 11:00 (Reply)
No one is perfect, even Quinito,,, the reason why Chino ang Quinito always cover Pacquiao fights and NBA finals is due to their mass attitude...

#36.1 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-12 14:11 (Reply)
But isn't about time to put away iyong mga salitang kanto ni Chino Trinidad? Isn't our language decent enough to say things properly during a basketball game? Nagtatanong lang po.

how about firebarrypascua...... anyway, great blog.. i really thought pinoy commentators/analyst (except mico halili and danny francisco) sucks.. lalo na pag nba finals.. malas mo pag wala kang btv.

I totally agree with your points about quinito henson. I usually find myself laughing hearing him during games. plus, you can also notice him becoming bias for a certain team. Quiinito is really a joke. His "dean's list segment" when he's doing a PBA game, it's funny how he come up with those.

Anyway, nice blog here!Keep it up!

Mr. Henson seems OK to me as a color guy. He doesn't seem any better or worse than the next guy in my opinion. I am thankful that you're doing this blog though.

My question is how many commentators are there? Among the play-by-play personalities I like that "Sev" guy (my father's nickname was "Sev" as a child because he had "several" nick names.. true story!) As for color commentators I like Jason Webb a lot, and Norman Black and Alex Compton.

Quinito Henson's "analysis" of a b-ball game consists mainly of stating the obvious, lacing it with chismis, and furring his brows now and then to project seriousness, and hence, "knowledge" of some sort. But at least, it's not the constant torture we endure in having to hear Paolo Trillo's "uuuhhhs" and long gaps between cliche phrases and idioms put together without thought. And will someone, please, for the love of kareem, tell Paolo that one doesn't "hang on the air," (which is not only grammatically wrong but is literal nonsense unless he's doing a Samboy) but "hangs ONTO THE AIR," (as in "dead air"), meaning, he won't let go of the live broadcast to turn it over to studio. Tagalugin na lang niya and spare our ears the aggravation. I can imagine Willy Hernandez, Joe Cantada and Pinggoy Pengson in their graves, trying to cover their ears and grimacing in pain. What I do to avoid the earache is turn down the TV volume and put on really loud rock music. Go figure.
