Fire Quinito wins Best Sports Blog at the 2009 Philippine Blog Awards

Fire Quinito was named Best Sports Blog at tonight’s Philippine Blog Awards. It’s a thrill receiving the honor from last year’s winner, the excellent running blog The Bull Runner.

In these cases, I’m usually inclined to go on and on about my own personal genius, but I had been reading Malcolm Gladwell’s “Outliers” which argues that success always has context, and the little success that this blog has had over its short six-month life is owed to a lot of people. My friends, especially those on Facebook, and readers of my old blogs really helped get things started. I’ve also had the good fortune of being able to get feedback very early on about this blog from people like Howie Severino (check out the comments on the first few posts) and Ed Lingao, although I don’t know how much they would want to associate themselves with this blog, really.

I was also encouraged by kind words from friends and personalities from the sports community: Jude Turcuato, Tim Starks, James Ty III, Rafe Bartholomew, Patricia Hizon, Charlie Cuna, Boyet Sison, TJ Manotoc, Johan Uichico, Fidel Mangonon, Rey Joble, Chris Soler, Mike Yu, Toff Rada and whoever else I forgot at the moment.

Thanks to everyone who read, commented, subscribed, followed, tweeted, and re-tweeted.

I am especially proud of the award because it’s not just for this blog, but for the burgeoning online sport blogging community that's passionate and features new voices and new ideas, people who see through the BS and write about angles that the traditional sports media miss or are too lazy to write about -- Basketball Exchange, hoops.blink.ph, Patay ang Butiki, Driball, and many others. This is for all of us.

It’s an exciting time to be a sports fan and a sports blogger, and if we keep this up, maybe we won’t need Quinito anymore.

O, winner talaga diba?

Dude you forgot to thank Bill Simmons, the guy you've been trying to ripped off in your blogs.
#12.1 jaemark on 2009-10-11 01:41 (Reply)
easy on the haterade there, buddy. simmons is the most widely read sports columnist in the world, and pretty much every sports blog in the world has in one way or another been influenced by the guy. this one included, and i've acknowledged that in my posts.

but he's not the only one i'm "ripping off." there's also will leitch, lang whitaker, kelly dwyer, bethlehem shoals, tom ziller, rick reilly, and many other sports bloggers and writers. you can add guys like nick hornby, chuck klosterman, conrad de quiros, michael chabon, and many others to the list.
#13 benj on 2009-10-11 12:42 (Reply)
congratulations. I hope Quinito has a good sense of humor. haha

nakakatawa naman yung hater. isang pangungusap na nga lang may grammatical error pa.
#13.1 jaemark on 2009-10-11 15:23 (Reply)
thanks, benj! i have no idea if quinito knows abt this site yet... but i suspect he does.
#14 ggginobili on 2009-10-11 15:09 (Reply)
Congrats Jae, you deserve it. I'm curious though, how much more excited would you be if if it was 'The Dean' who presented the award personally =|.

PS. More power to bloggers.

#15 jturcuato on 2009-10-12 07:59 (Reply)

Peace.
#15.1 jaemark on 2009-10-12 13:01 (Reply)

Congratulations to you Jaemark and to your blog Fire Quinito for winning the Best Sports Blog Award! Wish you all the best and more power!

Btw, because the PBA website doesn't have any banners for the winners, I decided to create one for myself. If you'd like one for your blog, let me know and I'll gladly make one for you. Just tell me the exact width that you want it to be.
