More on the Japeth Aguilar issue

There’s a raging discussion on the Japeth Aguilar issue all over the Internet, and at the Interbasket forums, my last piece on Japeth was posted on the thread. Anyway, one of the commenters, Patay-Butiki, who I assume runs the excellent Patay ang Butiki blog, (UPDATE: the commenter Patay-Butiki is not involved in the excellent Patay ang Butiki blog) had this to say:

well, firequinito does know his reporters. i'll give him that. but i just don't get the analogy with rabeh/ateneo. it's like comparing apples with oranges.

and the problem with blogs (unlike regular sports columns) is that you can hurl accusations and jump to outlandish conclusions and pass them off as facts.

Well, first, let’s tackle the Rabeh/Ateneo analogy. The PBA and the UAAP are both stakeholders of the SBP, which runs the Smart Gilas program. I’m not clear about the agreement between the SBP and the UAAP regarding the participation of the league’s players in the program, but we can deduce implicitly that participation with the varsity teams during the UAAP tournament is prioritized; Dylan Ababou, Mark Barroca, JR Cawaling, and Aldretch Ramos stopped training with the Gilas team to concentrate on the UAAP, while Ateneo stalwarts Rabeh Al-Husseini and Ryan Buenafe have deferred participation in the Gilas team’s international training last summer to concentrate on their commitments to Ateneo.

Meanwhile, prior to the Japeth saga, there were talks that the PBA was going to be willing to lend their players to the Gilas team in the future, pending some agreements. Gabe Norwood, Jared Dillinger, and Aguilar were reportedly being considered by Gilas coach Rajko Toroman to reinforce his team.

All that, of course, went to hell went Aguilar decided not to accept Burger King’s contract offer, and stated that he intends to play for Gilas full-time instead. BK manager Lito Alvarez asks the SBP to speak on the issue, but they prefer to keep mum. At this point, Aguilar and his agent Ronnie Nathanielsz say that it’s a unilateral decision on their part, and they have not spoken with the SBP.

Now, what if Rabeh Al-Husseini, the reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player, unilaterally decided to follow Japeth’s path, quit Ateneo, and play for Gilas exclusively? After all, Gilas had previously expressed interest in tapping his services, and surely it must be a greater honor to wear the Pilipinas jersey than a jersey of just one UAAP school. Will the SBP still maintain a hands-off stance?

The comparison is not apples to oranges, but Burger King apples to Ateneo apples.

Second, let’s talk about “hurling accusations” and “jumping to outlandish conclusions.” Here’s the gist of what I said in my previous post:

  1. Ronnie Nathanielsz has been known to be less than truthful if it advances his agenda.

  2. Nathanielsz has a good relationship with Ricky Vargas, who happens to be vice-chairman of the SBP.

  3. Rick Olivares, a writer known to have close ties with the SBP, broke the news of the meeting between Aguilar (with Nathanielsz) and Alvarez shortly after it happened on Wednesday.

  4. Noli Eala, the SBP executive director who loves to grandstand in the media, has been mum on the issue.

  5. Word from the SBP on the issue would settle this whole thing quickly, especially if Aguilar’s camp is being truthful that his decision to refuse the BK offer was done without the SBP’s knowledge.

I don’t see any accusation or outlandish conclusion.

I also take issue over the idea that “regular sports columns” never hurl accusations or jump to outlandish conclusions. I can point you to Olivares’ latest column, which is full of innuendo regarding Yeng Guiao’s performance in Tianjin – whether it’s true or not is another matter – or you can Google the term “Ronnie Nathanielsz” and see that the first result is a message board thread about him being a liar.

By the way, message board people, I don’t mind if my stuff is copied-and-pasted everywhere, but I would really appreciate it if you guys linked to the article along with the post. Thanks!

Its very easy for you to say that he erred in his decision because it is based on hindsight. The issue that you are raising against Japeth Aguilar is only TRIVIAL and MINISCULE compared to the importance of playing for flag and country.

PBA's loss is the country's gain and nothing is more important than that.

Marunong ka bang magbasa? Asan nakalagay diyan na "he erred in his decision"?
#1.1.1 Pinoy Basketbolero on 2009-09-01 13:52 (Reply)
Like I said, hindi na importante kahit ano pa yan, kahit hindi pa trustworthy yan si Ronnie Nathanielz, kahit hindi pako marunong magbasa.

The most important thing is he is already available to play FULL TIME for the country.
#1.1.1.1 eyra on 2009-09-01 18:30 (Reply)
hahaha... isa kang tanga... anong sabi mo, AGUILAR is available in PLAYING FULL TIME for the COUNTRY??????

he seems not so happy when burger king pick him in the draft. what if ginebra picked him?

yeng guaio is his coach on the powerade, alm nya at nakita n nya system ni yeng guiao. if japeth like his (yeng) system bkit sya hnd pipirma sa bk.

i dn't think yeng guaio is a good motivator. kitang kita yan sa pba. mas gus2 nyang makitang nanakit ung player nya instead n pagsabihan nya. there was also a game na sya p mismo ung nanakit sa player. kaya nga sna mapansin nu what ever team in the pba that yeng handled the team will become more physical.

redbull is a physical team pero hnd n ngayon ksi iba n coach.
burger king is now the physical team in the pba..

even in the FIBA-ASIA ang lakas ng boses dinig na dinig ung
P-I nya on the air.. not a good example as a coach even if he is good strategically...

I'm curious to know the provisions of the PBA contract of Japeth from Burger King, though. Becaue BK says it's willing to loan Japeth to Smart Gilas, but whether that includes playing for Gilas in the upcoming PBA conference, I'm not entirely sure.

Having the entire Gilas team available for the PBA campaign is an important factor in them building team chemistry and experience. That's why I don't understand the controversy about CJ Giles (lost amidst the much larger Japeth tiff), either. The point of Gilas participation is for the future international tourneys, not to win the PBA championship.

Whichever side of the fence you're on, you have to admit that Japeth made a mistake in entering the draft if he had no plans of playing for the team that drafts him. There may not be hard sanctions against it, but it is cruel. That's an investment by a professional team, a business, that goes to waste. Japeth should have realized that it would come down to a choice between Smart Gilas and Powerade, and should have made his decision knowing it would be important for both himself and all the other stakeholders in RP basketball.

#3.1 nelson on 2009-09-01 15:22 (Reply)

#4 Ronald Cano on 2009-09-01 16:05 (Reply)
#5 Rubio on 2009-09-01 16:09 (Reply)
Right of first refusal lang sa NBA teams.
#5.1 eyra on 2009-09-01 18:20 (Reply)

#6 Newbie on 2009-09-01 20:31 (Reply)
#6.1 j_myxx | PatayAngButiki on 2009-09-01 21:39 (Reply)
actually, the rubio case is a good comparison. rubio knew he needed a buyout and could have very easily waited out the last few years of his contract with joventut before making the leap to the NBA. the reason may be different from japeth's, but the situation is the same. he could have not entered the draft, the same way japeth could have. the wolves will wait out before rubio's new contract with barcelona is done. but at any time that rubio decides to go to the NBA, the wolves maintain his rights.

or take the case of rubio's spanish national team teammate juan carlos navarro. he was drafted by the washington wizards in 2002. he preferred to stay in europe instead. it took a trade in 2007 from washington to memphis (where his best friend pau gasol was playing) to get navarro to play in the NBA.

fran vazquez was a high draft pick (11th overall) of the orlando magic in 2005. he chose to stay in europe despite being drafted to the NBA as well. the magic retain his rights to this day.

notice that nobody suggested bans for those players. i think the PBA is making a big deal out of it because of the reason japeth gave for not wanting to sign in the PBA. but like eala tweeted, would anybody fuss about it if japeth was being recruited by the lakers? we'd let him go in an instant.

i agree japeth's camp did something wrong here, but a lifetime ban, i think, is unwarranted.
#6.1.1 jaemark on 2009-09-01 22:21 (Reply)
The reason the PBA wouldn't be making a fuss if Japeth were to leave for the Lakers is because the PBA is not a stakeholder in the NBA. The PBA is a stakeholder in the SBP.

I really don't understand the reason why these businessmen who own teams in the PBA think that they are more important than their country.

Is it simple enough that country comes first? Its a no-brainer.

Whatever reasons or some people might say Aguilar's lack of word of honor, mukhang pera or isip bata, I guess that it has already been rectified a hundred fold with his desire to play for flag and country.

I really hope and pray to God that the PBA do my country a big favor by banning the rest of Smart-Gilas team, and new players as well.

"I really don't understand the reason why these businessmen who own teams in the PBA think that they are more important than their country."

the very same reason they wouldnt care about you or me..even if you drink their beers, gas your car,eat their hotdogs or feed your fighting cook with their pellets. all they want is your money. and they have low perception of the general masses. the same way your senator and congressman, mayor and governors treat you. they just want you to pay all those exorbitant taxes so they can live lavishly and thier families while millions upon millions of filipinos die.
#8 SportsFAN on 2009-09-03 13:08 (Reply)
Yeng Guiao dropped the ball in the case of Japeth Aguilar. There's no other reason for him to suddenly turn his back on his verbal agreement with Burger King except for the Tianjin stint. It certainly casts a bad light on his ability to be true to his word, but if he becomes a creditable basketball player, I tell you, that will quickly be forgiven him.

The difference with his case and that of Alex Cabagnot is that I think Alex had a live contract with SLR when he suddenly packed his bags to go home to the U.S. Japeth has not signed any contract yet. So legally they may be right that the only penalty is to sit out one or two years.

The PBA level of play has really deteriorated. The Smart Gilas program offers an attractive if temporary alternative for the college players. If I were the PBA, I would handle this case very wisely and not try to bully Japeth. It can very well explode in their faces.

HALLLERRRR......PURO KAYO BUSINESS AS USUAL!!!! ANO KAYA KUNG ANG PBA ANG I-DIS-BAND??? MONOPOLYO NA KC ITO...MASYADO NANG COMMERCIAL!!! PA-EPEK LANG PAGSALI SA INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION...ALA NAMANG KADATING-DATING LARO NILA...PANG KOLEHIYO LANG!!!
