Boxing mop-up: Donaire and Viloria
Fire Quinito gathers all the essential reading for the Viloria-Donaire knockouts, so you can save time to gawk at Zac Efron's waxed eyebrows and washboard abs.
James Slater, East Side Boxing: "We saw some of Donaire's classy boxing ability in the 3rd round, as he switched tactics for a time, probably as astonished as the rest of us that Martinez was still there. But then the thing he is both best known for and the thing that makes him such a thrill to watch - his numbing KO power - came back into view, and Martinez was sent crashing one more time. The peach of a left uppercut that put the challenger down in the 4th round was really something to see, and without bothering to count after having seen it, the third man in the ring waved the fight off."
Doug Fischer, Ring TV: "If Donaire can carry his speed and power to the 115- or 118-pound division, Pacquiao won't be the only pound-for-pound-rated Filipino for long. For now, Donaire is the best flyweight in the world. Viloria, who knocked out Ulises Solis in the 11th round of a rousing battle for the Mexican's IBF 108-pound title, has established himself as the second best junior flyweight in the world, right below RING champ Ivan Calderon.
Brickhaus, Bad Left Hook: "The first of the main events was Ulises Solis against Brian Viloria. Viloria has always been a fighter who I've felt like never lived up to his potential. He's always had a lot of talent, but he's always seemed to lack focus. He's been a really frustrating fighter to watch, who has seemed to lack heart, and would just fade late in fights and give up at the first sign of adversity. While he had the talent, he couldn't put it to good use, and just didn't seem to have the drive required to do what it takes to win. Not anymore. In a spectacular bout, Viloria knocked out Solis in the waning seconds of the 11th round."
Gabriel Montoya, Maxboxing.com: "Nonito Donaire’s win was impressive but possibly deceptive. The things I saw in there that I didn’t like was how he totally abandoned boxing smart once he got his man hurt. He tried to finish, I will give him that in the first. But after that, he abandoned the jab and made the fight harder but trying to muscle through his shots rather than popping the jab, flowing with the combos and letting it happen. Part of it might be rust. Probably a big part but even still, if he wants [Fernando] Montiel next, he is going to have to brush up and stay in shape to be sharp for every second of every round. 'Daisy Dukes' Montiel is a bad man with fast hands and power to match. One thing you can guarantee with Montiel (besides hip huggers) is that he won’t be forgetting the little things like Nonito did. If I was his camp, if the Montiel fight can’t be made, take a quick turnaround bout to stay active."
Rick Olivares, Business Mirror: "There was police escort for Team Donaire as they breezed through the light Metro traffic of a Sunday morning. There was a certain dark humor to the ride as Rachel cautioned the family driver to keep a healthy distance between the lead car and the motorcycle escort. And, like clockwork, the four-vehicle convoy arrived at the Big Dome exactly at 9:30. Earlier, he spoke of his excitement about fighting not just in front of his countrymen but in the same venue where Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier waged one of the best battles inside the square ring. 'Now hopefully, we can put on a good show for the fans and we won’t go home disappointed,' he said before gulping down a bottle of water."
Olmin R. Leyba, GMANews.TV: "Since his fall from the top, ex-WBC 108-lb king Viloria swallowed his pride and toiled in the non-lucrative, non-televised Alameda Swap Meet in the LA, fighting five 'tune-up fights' throughout 2008 as he prepares to get a shot at redemption. Upon the advice of his manager Gary Gittelsohn, the 'Hawaiian Punch' also gave up his celebrity lifestyle, joining the La Colonia Boxing Club under former world champion Robert Garcia in Oxnard, California where he spent days eating and breathing boxing and nothing else. No distractions whatsoever."
